Excel is excellent for what it is made for. Access is too. People need to use the right tool for the job. I visualize excel as a wrench and access as a hammer. If you're driving 6" nails, which most people are trying to do with excel, don't use a wrench, get a hammer! I have seen so many people trying to use excel to track projects, contracts, merge-mailing and address/ phone numbers. Whew!
