LOL -- thanks, Dad, I knew I could count on you for support. Seriously, those are comforting words, except that it shows how old I'm getting. Maybe I oughta say I started in the business when I was 12. Yeah, I like that... --Steve{quote:title=

As one of probably 100's if not 1000's of original PIBMUG members (Pasadena IBM User Group - for PC World manager neophytes), I've been a Bass follower for about 20 years. I can always depend on Bass for straight facts and honest information. And with his history with technology, his contact base allows him to get information other tech writers can't duplicate. How many other PC World writers have that kind of insight and consistent reputation and for as many years as Bass? Yeh, that's what I thought. Looking forward to TechBite.

Jim,

I'll miss (already am) posting a quick blog about something cool. But it's just the economy. PCW's decision had nothing to do with me personally (at least I hope not) ; it was strictly a decision based on money. (Yet -- and I say this with a LOL -- with what they paid me, I can't imagine it would've made much of a difference.) --Steve

Steve you will be greatly missed. PC World is an excellent magazine which I've subscribed to for years. I hate to think this great magazine is beginning to cut editorial corners to bolster their bottom line yet letting excellent tech-journalists like you go after 20 years is a major shortcoming.

I do respect PCW for at least letting us know that we can find you at TechBite.com. This jesture kept me from having desires to cancel my subscription.

Keep up the great work.

Jim

Steve Bass had become the only credible columnist at PCW and the only reason I renewed my subscription each year. Truly a bad move by PCW and entirely their loss. The fan base now moves......

Great opportunities, for sure, and they're pretty exciting. The only dilemma now is I'll need to find a new editor to hassle... --Steve

It is really a shame to learn you will no longer be with PC World. You have had so much to share and teach that I feel it will be more a loss for this magazine than for yourself. I am sure this will mean new great opportunities for you. Best wishes and good luck!

Steve,
Will your past columns/blogs/email letters be available at your new site? I often go back to prior "issues" and would hate to think they will just fall into the PCW Triangle. Thanks

Old Uncle Steve, eh? The guy that carves up the turkey at Thanksgiving... Oh, that's good, Ballpark, just too well said. Seriously, I hear what you're saying and absolutely take it as a great compliment. As I've said to others in the forum -- stay in touch. I don't know what I do without you all. BTW, you want a drumstick? --Steve

Dear PCW,
Please do not send me 457 mailings regarding continuing my subscription, because I decided to cancel when I heard that Steve Bass received the axe.

What you probably don't understand is that Steve was the 1 guy that put a human face on discussions about PCs and technology. To me he was the cool, smart Uncle I never met but would teach me something new each time I read his letters...and each time I would get another glimpse of who he was.

Steve's love of life, technology, and writing made his columns a true joy to read.

I have unsubscribed to anything I was receiving from PCWorld. I have also written leters to CEO and editor to the effect that you were the major reason that I was on their mailing lists, and that I see no purpose in maintaining any relationship with them without you there. Have already been a long term subscriber to your Yahoo groups newsletter & blogs, and will continue to follow you with that and with techbite. I am enjoying you on Facebook as well. Much appreciation for all your tips, tweaks, humor and timewasters. And more especially, thank you, Steve, for giving us a way to follow you.

I'm already on it! I get your other distribution email and look forward to the new feed. If it doesn't arrive for any reason I will definitely re-up at TechBite.com

We're exploring that, Ken, and there's a strong likelihood everything will be archived and available through a super fast search engine. But I don't doubt that all my content will stay on PCW's site and you can access it using a Google script. (It's not really a script, but not sure what to call it.)

Open Google and insert this line in the search field:

-subwoofer -2007 -2006 -2005 -2004 -2003 -2002 -2001 -2000 site:pcworld.com

Then add your search request on the very left of the line. Leave a space before "-subwoofer" and use quotes, such as "steve bass" gadgets for specific searches. Remove each year for dated searches.

I'll have more tips like this in the TechBite.com newsletter.

I completely concur with all the previous sentiments, especially the fact that Steve spoke to all of us, not just the techies. Contrary to what the powers at PCW seems to believe, they do have many readers who are not professionals in the various fields relating to computer technology, and who want to keep up with technology and understand what they are reading. Steve made this possible. The information, and humor that Steve brought to his column will be deeply missed at PCW. I will look forward to reciving Steve's newsletter. PCW - wake up!

I have enjoyed reading your column both online and in The PCWorld magazine. Your column is the main reason I signed up for the magazine...so now, I will be giving the magazine although I just renewed my subscription. I feel sad that as we all get a little years under our feet, management can only see the bottom line that the wealth of an individual.

Dear Steve,

We tried terribly hard to figure out how to post a comment, but we're not sure if we succeeded........Moe thought we were supposed to click on your picture, and Curly did that several times, but all you did was blink. Larry thought we should "sign in" first, but when we tried out we ended up signing up for twelve more newsletters......Shemp said we should just forget the whole thing because PC World would never post anything we wrote.

But we're trying anyway!

We always thought you were the best reason to read PC World......we enjoyed all the other Steves nearly as much as reading your column, of course.....but for us, you were the glue. When we saw that picture of you in the yellow shirt as we perused a new issue, we knew we'd found our home page.

Then, of course, you were shuffled off to the back, and we wandered around in video nirvana with big-screen TVs looking for computer help. Along the way, we stumbled into the camera department, but that's not what we were after. Finally, there you were in the back, with no yellow shirt, so we knew it was just a matter of time before your number came up.

Though we're sad to see you leave PC World, the Stooges and I think that we and you and all of your readers will have the last laugh. So we'll see you over at TechBite. Or wherever.

By the way, did those clowns from The Phone Company ever get your DSL line working?

All the best!

LOL, you're right, Michael, I did float around the magazine (and that means you've been reading it for a very long time). I started on the last page of the magazine writing Taking it Home. Steve Manes got that spot (I wonder what happened to him...) and I moved to the front of the magazine. After a while I was shuffled into a dark corner near the back of the Help columns.
All the while, loyal readers like you followed me and my reader survey numbers stayed on course. (My Hassle-Free PC was rated in the top five in reader value consistently for over two years.)
And the DSL (you go back even longer than I thought) is long gone, as is the ISDN line. I'm now happy with a cable connection. Nonetheless, the installers were cut from the same cloth as the DSL people -- and they all looked like the three stoooges. --Steve

Thank you very much for being you, you gave me the comfort to navigate around technology like nobody else. I have been in the technology field all my life, and nobody can explain things so easy, have fun, intrigued people, and hooked people in technology like you. Thanks again

Steve,

I am sorry to (for PC World) to see you go. I have enjoyed your contributions to this once great publication. I always turned to yours and the other Steve's (M) pages before reading the rest.

Bass is gone - glad I didn't bite on the $12.00 subscription goodie ... he's worth more than PCW at full price ...

You guys up in the tower have made a huge blunder ...
