Yep, it's true that the rated temperature minimums for cameras can usually be broken without a problem. I took my camera at the time (a Canon 30D with a lower temp rating of 32 degrees F) to the ICE! exhibit, which is in a large tented area kept at 9 degrees F. It performed well throughout. Putting it in my camera bag, zipped completely closed, was enough to keep condensation from forming when I walked out into the 80 degree outside. Just don't open the camera bag for a couple of hours. :)
