"The company has now officially delayed the release of the first public Windows 7 beta until "early 2009""
What in the world are you talking about?
"now"? That's when Microsoft said the beta would arrive back at PDC! The "Windows 7 Beta for Christmas this year" was only a rumor. Microsoft NEVER SAID THAT.
"the initial PDC build was woefully inadequate and demonstrated none of the claimed improvements in performance or resource consumption."
This is completely untrue and unfair.
In his hands-on review of Windows 7 build 6801, Stephen at uxevangelist.net said this:
"there is one very important notable point I'd like to make: Performance on Windows 7 is much better than both XP and Vista. Tasks I normally perform (and have for years) seem to use considerably less power than on either OS prior, because my fans kick on much less than they do on XP and Vista. I actually copied the build for a co-worker of mine who installed the build and made the exact same discovery."
In Steven Sinofsky's presentation of Windows 7 at PDC, he said that after the feature complete beta comes out, they'll work on eliminating bugs and improving performance.
So many of the performance tweaks and bug fixes haven't been completed yet. What do you expect? It's a PRE-BETA!
When you use an alpha version of Ubuntu, do you complain about bugs and incomplete features in it? No! It's what you expect in pre-release software.
So please stop complaining that the Windows 7 pre-beta is unfinished.

I'm sorry, but I can only continue laughing at you. Your obsession with how terrible anything post-xp is is something that far beyond annoying. This is something that's an alpha version. The article that you want to write is for the RC2 version of 7, this is something that we're only thinking about getting a beta version, not to mention a RC version.
Stop your hating, get off the soap box, find what is really wrong, and tell how they can fix it, other then simply whining like PC world is obsessed with doing.

This kind of article is the reason I dropped my PC World subscription. Kind of stupid to call yourself PC world if you hate PCs.
Maybe you should check your sources before you decide you hate the PDC build; most people seem to think it's a great improvement.

Wow, apparently you haven't learned anything yet. The idea that your "scathing review" alone made Microsoft supposedly change their beta release date just shows how arrogant you really are. I'm astounded that you can call this "journalism." This kind of opinionated reporting should be on a personal blog, not a major news publication. You should be fired, but I imagine you won't be because you keep the readers stirred up. I was half-heartedly considering renewing my PC World subscription, which I've had continously since Jan. 2000, but I think have just about lost all my respect for PC World and/or its parent company. Not only am I no longer a paying subscriber, but I'm just about ready to take myself off the subscription list for the daily news emails, because this is not even close to real news anymore.

All M$ has to do to make 7 a success is make it run smoothly
Rid the bloat, rid the OS of the DRM, make it modular, they will have success.
People just want something that works, and that they do not have to upgrade all of their current peripherals or software. Utilities is a given. Why does Server 2008 work so well? Or is that less exposed?

This guy's hilarious. His uninformed, random hating has brought PC World down to a new low.

That's it. I'm dropping this PCWorld rss feed. All I ever get is Mac news anyway. Now, the PC news seems like it was written by delutional non-pc people whose only goal here is to promote their niche platform.

What is wrong with PC World? This guy is such a tool. In this economy, no one who writes like this should have a job.

Hey writer...better to let ppl think you are stupid...then to open your mouth and remove all doubt. Do you even use Windows? You must be confused with teh year a desktop friendly version on Linux will be available. Or the years the CUBS will win the World Series.

Looks like the M$ staff has nothing better to do with their time then read reviews of their 'new incredibly improved win 7 (vista)' - just ask them; and then they cry when they can't stomach the sad truth and go on the offensive with slanderous comments - what a waste of misguided effort!

Good heavens! Microsoft changes direction on Windows 7 and you think YOU'RE the reason for that? What an ego you have!

The computer industry is a very complicated field with information changing daily, even hourly. Do you really think you alone provoked the largest software corporation in the world to change their biggest offering?

You need a shrink.

This article is a fat bowl of FAIL!!!

1. MS didn't postpone anything because of the author. To claim as such is absurd.

2. The PDC build was an OLDER ALPHA. Of course it didn't contain all the "good bits". Even those of us that attended KNEW THAT. Either way, that means nothing to stability of Windows 7. Just more crying from someone that wants more then what he's got.

"or was it the other way around?"

Glad to know you report based on a weak memory and not actual facts.

"Paul should know"

And if you had an actual brain you would know he's NDA'ed. He can't comment on anything unreleased so his comments are strictly based on the pre beta build. For those that KNOW, there is more coming. You could also look at his comment from the point of view of Beta 1. In that case, he's right. As of Beta 1 (the REAL Beta 1) Windows 7 will be feature complete. For the most part. You got a problem with that?

One clear example of that would be WARP. Which is NOT in the PDC build handed out to us. Do you bother to mention that here? No, because you're an idiot that can't report for squat!

Is this article for real? Or is it meant to be humorous? Or is it a ploy to get irate readers to comment? I don't know. But if it is for real, it's the one of the most ridiculous pieces of journalism I've ever read. I wasn't expecting this from PC World! Case in point: I followed the link about Thurrott's supposed concerns with the Windows 7 GUI, and what this author said was totally wrong. All Thurrott was talking about was two opposing viewpoints on Windows 7 error recovery. Nothing was mentioned about a GUI. This author must be severely ethically challenged to take someone's words and twist them like that.

My mistake, I just read the link the author was referring to; it was buried in the middle of the page and I previously missed it.

For those who think this is a PC World article, look again. It is an Infoworld article that has been picked up and posted in the news discussion area of the PC World forum for comment. Those that have the PC World print version will not find the article in their magazine. (Thank goodness) These articles are picked up and posted by the post bot and posted automatically.

As much as we decry the stupidity of some of the Infoworld and Computerworld articles and the lack of applicability of the MacWorld articles, they are news worthy none the less. They are posted here for commentary by the members.

Unfortunately I doubt that the author will see any of the well pointed comments about his lack of ability, as I doubt that he will ever find his way to this community discussion. He's probably too busy planning his next attack on Windows 8. The fact that it is not even in the conceptual stage should not hold him back, as obviously his opinion is far more important than any facts could be.

Windows 7 was handed out to a specific group of people, however I did find uploaded copies on many torrent sites. But I don't think I can mention any like piratebay.org :-)

In many forums I have read many have wiped there system an installed it. Dumb move. The Alpha release is not ready to run any software, it is just to give you an idea of what the physical system will look like and showing off some proposed features. It si best tested using a virtual pc like Virtualbox which is a free open source software. You simply choose Windows Vista as the OS you are installing and that works find.
