In word 2007 there is a word count button on the Review Toolbar

Great article. To add the word count in Word 2007 is quite simple. First right click in the quick access tool bar located normally near the windows office logo. Select customize quick access toolbar. in the drop down menu select all commands. The list is long but in the W's Word count exists. While you are at it some other helpful buttons for college students like me are the Show formatting, spelling and grammar, and my favorite quick print. I hope that this helps.
