good luck josephwin ( and keep us posted on how it works for you) i tried triple booting vista home premium 64 bit /win xp pro 32 bit / ubuntu 8.04 64 bit and it all worked for a time but i keep losing the win xp boot loader (ntbootloader.dll or something like that) and have fixed it twice but can not get it a third time. i think i did it in the wrong order as i had vista first then install win xp (as a dual boot) and after the install in had to re install the vista boot loader as the win xp boot loader could not see the vista partrition then after ubuntu install everything worked fine for about 2 months and then i fixed the ntbootloader and was fine for another 2 months and then i had to fix the ntbootloader again and it worked fine for another 2 months but after the third time i eliminated the ubuntu and just tried to fix up the dual boot but could not get the ntbootloader to work

so right now i am on vista and have to extra partitions (c and d are 110 gb and x is only 20 gb ( linux pation and i got rid of the swap partition and can access all the partition with vista

they say the right order to install multiple os is to install win xp first and maybe that is what cause some of my problems

might try fedora core 9 on partition x and just run my system as a dual boot for now

OK... I believe I've have tried to triple boot a while back... couple months or so. I think the results were of your results. I own all my operating systems,,,, ie I have the discs. So retrieving my operating systems is not a real problem. I just tired of copying some stuff over and over again... and then retrieving the operating system. I'm thinking vista is the issue... or windows in general. They do not like other operating systems..lol... maybe.
My system is fairly new (September build). It has a dual core Intel processor and 400 gigs of hard drive space. XP is partition using 120 gigs... vista using 150gigs. So I have plenty of room for this to happen.

It should be a simple process, you think???

OH.. I found a new article on open source new operating systems updates. The big three have updated their operating systems.

Thanks for the support..group

yes and remember if you are going to install mutple windoze os' ( on your triple boot ) try the older windoze first then after that the newer windoze then ubuntu ( it may help and that is what i have been told might have been my trouble vista was on the original c: drive and not win xp pro)

yeah i have all my disk to but fixing up the mbr multiple times is getting old but when i get more time ( save some photos and doc and do a back up of vista) i might do a complete re install and try the triple boot too again as many pointed out that because vista was on the original c: drive might have been the cause of the corrupt ntbootloader files

my system is a dual core x2 4200 with 2 gb ddr2 @ 667 and a 250 gb hdd so i was not trying thison a old system but a current one

I've had good experiences with Linux Mint, which is a repackaged, prettier and more user friendly Ubuntu distro.

how stupid you need to be that you need read a full document how to install ubuntu, it has been always very straight and fast process, dvd in, boot up, start the desktop, click install icon from desktop.. then its ask you a about 3 questions and then its all happpend automaticly, it ask you a language, geo-position and then about where it installed it on your harddrive. thats it.
every where magazines write how easy vista is install.. and with ubuntu the process is almost same.

for a noob and maybe with a first time install it can be very daunting so they may seek out a little reassurance

ten years ago linux was more troublesome installing but lately (in the last 3 years) i have had far less trouble installing linux then most windoze installs

so i think that linux ( well most of my expeirence is with ubuntu and kubuntu but i have tried others and i have down loaded fedora core 9 but have had no time to try it out yet) has come a long way in the last decade

mrme...

How rude to use the word 'stupid' in the context of this forum. I've installed windows products many times.. many hard drives... never an issue. I've tried to install unix after windows has been install and working and have come across many issues with unix (ubuntu). Even windows publishes docs to help with the process of installing windows. Are we stupid to read those also? Are we stupid to read any docs referring to Linux and learn of its capabilities? I want the install of ubuntu to go smoothly. Why would I do this otherwise? If many attempts fail maybe I'm missing something with the installation method. How can this be stupid?

dam it.... Don't bash those who try.

hmm, yeah.. perhaps word "stupid" was too strong word to describe my point.

but with Ubuntu i really doesn't understand why somebody needs a installing tips about 5 page, it has most easiest installing program what you can find a linux world.

if you using a advanced mode (text based so on..) they has a documentation in the system for that.. i think that my point was just bring that out :)

i'm deeply sorry if somebody gets bad feelings on my post. Sorry and big sorry again.

Of course your apology is accepted... My remarks towards that subject was to generate a feeling for all individuals who use these groups. Nobody is stupid. I applaud all individuals who at least attempt these applications...

and other members..

I want to end the topic of 'stupid' and move on..

I have some good news.. in another response.. soon

dragon69.. and other members

Yesterday I put the new version of Ubuntu.. ubuntu 8.10 on a disk.... and today attempted the triple booting...

Two hours ago I started the process by setting a partition in Vista disk management for about 10 gbs. ..set it to active and threw in the ubuntu disk... shut down and then started up... always from disk boot... This is in case problems occur I can install an operating system with out problems. Just make sure the tray is empty otherwise.

It took a while but ..success with the installation of Ubuntu 8.10. I am now tripling booting. 213 updates also installed. I did a little navigating and all is good.

Yahoo!!!!

good job josephwin and i bet those 213 updates took less time and required less reboots than a typical windoze install

(is your vista or win xp on the c; drive as some said because vista was on before is part of the reason that my ntbootloader was causing me problems )

sounds like your new year is starting off great

good luck and take care

Thanks man....
All in all, it did not take very long at all. The ubuntu was less than 700 gb... slow transfer rate. I had to load twice to disk. Errored out. When I'm doing stuff like this, everything else is closed or stopped. I think it errored because I was away from the computer and I was supposed to accept something and it sat on the screen too long. Pretty cool though!!! I am now a member of the ubuntu community and soon forums...

Vista c drive.... 150 gb xp pro d drive..... using 130gb dvd RW on e drive and now Ubuntu on f drive....using 10 gb. Then a lot of extra space for backups and such. I have a fairly new WD 400 gb sata hard drive.

I did use an old hard drive just to see if the cd would load... all is good in open land!!!!

Thanks for all the support group.... and yeah a good start in this new year..

I'm also starting a A+ cert course in a week with help from a county work force program... (no cost to me)

Real good start of this new year!!!!

cheers

joseph ... :-D

Tried Ubuntu once again ... as an alternative to Vista. Unfortunately there are so many issues that it goes way beyond "learning curve". 2 hours to see windows network shares and lots of editing config files. 30 minutes to figure out how to turn on access to user root. Gave up before working on Network Printers not showing up (again windows stuff).
Also won't run Photoshop and for me, a photographer, that's a biggie. Gimp just doesn't cut it.

Well, my attempts with triple booting failed. I will not try triple booting ever. I am tired of 'fixing' things. What I will DO, is use a virtual machine to load ubuntu. I recently loaded windows 7 beta and all works well there. In the new virtual hard drive I'll 'slide' apps over and see if they will work in ubuntu. Also known open source apps as well....
