Does the Internet Need its Own Police Force?

Crimes committed on the internet are no different from crimes committed elsewhere and they need to be prosecuted the same way. We have too many government agencies already sucking up funds, invading privacy, etc. I don't care how bad this gets; with a new agency the problems will get worse.

Agreed, I don't believe anybody is really doing their current job when it comes to prosecuting these people. Let's follow our current laws and try putting our current system to actual use before even discussing a new system. Besides, am I the only one who gets the feeling that this is all a ploy to cripple the internet. Maybe the 'criminals' aren't who you really think. Welcome Internet 2.0!

You bet. It's just Obama and his cronies (that's plenty) trying to gain even more control.

Let's see... A Finland-based security company, a security expert based in Honk Kong, and
a computer forensic expert who is the secretary of Asia Pacific International High Technology
Crime Investigation Association say that internet crime is up in 2008... It logically follows that
these are Obama's cronies, or that Obama and his cronies are behind this...
PC World's forums are really turning into a endless source of absurdist comedy.

We cover much of our frustrations as cyber crime investigators in our new book: Cyber Crime Fighters: Tales from the Trenches. It's easy to say law enforcement isn't doing enough but here's the reality: Most cyber crime is very difficult to investigate and prosecute because it crosses jurisdictional boundaries. On-line predators are so prevelant it's like shooting fish in a barrel and there aren't enough man hours to run with every case which requires someone dedicated to chat rooms and being on-line. Most police departments usually only have one cyber crime investigator that requires years of training. That officer suddenly gets promoted and everyone has to start from scratch again. The FBI has still not updated their crime collection reporting system to reflect accurate capture of cyber crime. For example, Identity Theft is captured as "Impersonation" the same as if someone impersonated a police officer.
It is frustrating to law enforcement and especially to victims. It is especially disheartening when children are involved. That's why we dedicate an entire chapter to how we would fight cyber crime in our book.
