I doubt it. I don't expect Windows 7 to be a Linux killer. We'll see.

"Windows 7: Linux Terminator"
HAHAHA. I don't even need to read any more of this article, that is the most foolish title I've ever seen.
How much did the author get paid directly from MS for writing this? I'm honestly curious.

P.S.> Windows 7 is nothing but Vista-mess-up-recovery-mode for Microsoft. Lets hope they manage to not mess up the recovery effort, or Linux won't even have competition to strive against at all (what little exists). Windows owns market share, and copies features 6 years late... that about sums it up.

WINDOWS FREE??? What kind of alternate universe is this?!?!?

No, of course not. Unless pirated, of course, but that isn't legal...

I was being sarcastic. Why would I want to pay for Windows 7 when I can use Ubuntu for free.

Okay, let's assume they manage to make some software that handles okay on lower end machines...

So what you're saying is that Linux has had a significant impact on Windows development, forcing them to tighten it up and produce competitive software?

I fail to see the problem; this is one of the wonderful side effects of FOSS. It raises the bar for everyone.

geeze already attacking a product before it ever comes out. I guess you guys want to see Microsoft to really go away. Yep they are doing poorly with the gaming business *being sarcastic". That means apple can do whatever it wants good or bad and people will stay say "wow apple rocks" lol.

I've been keeping up to date with windows 7 and from what I've seen. And from some benchmarks test. The early beta version out preformed vista and xp in almost all of the tests... Windows 7 will be what vista should have been if they had waited to release it. As for the price i hope it won't cost too much to upgrade. I'm going to try the public beta when it comes out soon but I'm sure this will be the OS i can upgrade my XP machines too.

Do I remember WordPerfect? Youbetcha. And I'm still faithfully using it after 10 years, having begun with WP 8 , which came installed on a 386 my geek neighbor pieced together. That the machine also had Word 97 was no matter; it was handily ignored as I promptly fell in love with WP 8 for its simplicity and user friendly interface, most notably the prompt-as-you-go feature, which places synonyms in easy reach.
You can get the next-to-latest WordPerfect OEM version X3 cheap from www.SoftwareOutlet.com.

Wow. A discussion about Windows 7's effect on Linux, and it there were eight posts before anyone mentioned Apple. That might be a record.

Eleven posts, and probably would've gone longer before YOU mentioned it.

I don't think Microsoft's planning on giving away Windows 7, or becoming POSIX compliant, or even fixing bugs. They dug themselves a deep hole even on the drivers.

They're not about to 'about-face' on the DRM crap that cripples Vista and makes a lot of PCs behave badly. It will be back in by the time they ship, or Microsoft will be mightily sued by those recording industry 'partners' they got into bed with.

These previews will all work fine until Microsoft starts dumping their 'new features' and existing baggage back into it.

Their new 'web connectivity' that offers 'enhanced experiences' for Microsoft users (such as probably a 75% malware versus sofware ratio, instead of the current 65/35) has to be figured in. That 'Cloud Computing' hype will make LOTS of new holes to exploit.

Then you have to consider a 'FRESH' windows install versus your existing installs that have accumulated the standard goo.

The only new thing 'Windows 7' can do is pretend to be the light at the end of the tunnel for all those M$ fanboys.

Better check post number nine. I wasn't the first to mention it. I was just pointing out how someone always has to bring them up (usually in a snide manner, as in this discussion).

Wow, it seems like none of you guys have been keeping up with Windows 7. From those who have actually used it, most reported that its a million times better than Vista. So Windows 7 being the Linux Terminator?

ABSOLUTELY!

Linux has one problem. It has mad vulnerabilities. Linux sites getting hacked and the OS is chalked full of holes. Driver support? Give me a break! Just check out the National Vulnerability Database run by the U.S. Computer Emergency Response Team. The only thing worse than Linux in security is OS-X Leopard.

If anything, you need to check out Steven Sinofsky's blog. They are listening to people. They know what they gotta fix. I think many people will be blown away by Windows 7.

Instead of hating on a product, why don't you actually try it. You pay for the quality you get. In Linux quality, you still can't do things on Linux that is possible on Vista. Yall know this so why do you guys keep bragging about Linux when it doesn't even have 1 percent of the market?

THANK YOU technicaljedi721 you have explained it much better than i. I envy you for that. And this is to all fairness to EVERYONE i have actually tried them all Windows/Linux/Mac. I like diversity each has its own unique strengths and weakness. What i am getting sick of tired is the same o moaning and griping about a product because one company that has been hated a lot. I mean geeze it has gotten to the point that even if MS did came out something more productive you still bash it anyways. At least MS does tells you the vulnerabilities and whats going on. Here whats even more worst than anything else. You guys complain how windows has viruses/malware/spyware???. Ever wonder where they come from in the first place???. Its those people that has too much time on their hands creating these malicious code. You can't say windows is the problem when in fact VIRUS WRITERS are the problem.

I bet you anything its the Linux users that writes windows viruses so they can force users to use Linux. This is why i don't take the I.T seriously anymore. This whole things is run by Monkeys. The only thing Linux is good at is writing Windows viruses to get people to say "yes windows blows Linux rocks". I have stopped listening to people "word of mouth" and actually find out for myself.

Just like the Mythbusters "we just don't tell it we put it to the test" And no i don't mean by just running a 123 and don't bother to try the rest. It has to be someone that does not have a one sided view either. No Wounder Linux is at staggering 1%. With that kind of mindset be lucky if they hit to 2% and that is a maybe. If anything that is going to compete with Microsoft is apple. At least apple has a Valid business where people can actually make money. Yes folks its called creating more jobs when we are at a all time lows. Linux users have this fantasy dream that everything should be free. uhh Where are the jobs??. oh no problem we just use cheap labor at a very minimum wage. Apple is at what 5-8% now. And Linux 1%. At a time like this the least thing we want is having less and less jobs.

Whats even more upsetting is people don't want to pay for a product but at the sametime they want to keep their jobs??. how is that going to work. The money has to come from somewhere??.

Its like going to a movie theater but yet you don't want to pay to go see the movie. How long before they be in business??. I just can't believe people have lost their economical senses and that is very sad.

Furthermore. You say MS is a monopoly "evil empire" when in fact you can't run Mac OSX nothing but a apple? No wounder windows has viruses. Especially when it comes from the jealous camp (apple/Linux). These people will do anything in their power to say how windows Or how they like to call it it "windoze" sucks. It won't be long before apple learns a hard lesson that not alot of people can't afford these high class computers. This is what keeps apple going but it will not over take "the evil empire" with this strategy. At least WINDOWS can be run on a MAC/MACBOOK PRO.

For those that are pc tech savy. Those are the ones that are getting big bang for the buck. Even more than hold my hand steve jobs and i do anything to buy a mac at any price can ever provide hands down.

There are varying opinions. We'll find out soon enough who's right. No need to get all worked up about it.
