This is a very good and useful list. Thanks. I also find it interesting to search for free commercial games at http://downloadanystuff.org

when did savage 2 go freeware? from what i understand it was always free to play, you just have the option of buying a premium account which unlocks some special "hell-borne" units. how ever the origial savage has gone free ware, and IMO is a much better game anyway.

Great article and you mentioned some pretty good games. I have been playing Continuum since around 1998 and it is still alive and kicking. There have been lots of updates to the client since it was created, and there are more zones than ever. It is still a very competitive game with lots of leagues, and a bunch of great players. If you are looking for a fun game and community you should check it out at www.trenchwars.org

Not only is SubSpace still being updated, but it actually boasts a large player base with many zones featuring a variety of different gametypes.
When the company which owned our favorite game decided to drop us, one player, PriitK (known for his work on Kazaa and Skype), reworked the entire game engine and coded us an entirely new client. The new client, named Continuum, allowed us to continue developing this game and produced an environment in which the community could flourish.
The newest client can always be downloaded from http://www.getcontinuum.com/
Some of the zones included:
http://www.rshl.org - Home website of SSCE Hockey/Football zone. (My personal favorite.)
This zone is one of the oldest of the zones, originating prior to Virgin Interactive Entertainment's (VIE) death. The zone currently boasts an active population of over 200 members in its league, having two leagues dedicated to Hockey and one to Football. The primary league, the Realistic SubSpace Hockey League (RSHL) is currently finishing its 15th season and is showing no signs of slowing down.
http://www.trenchwars.org/ - Home website of SSCU Trench Wars
This is the largest zone in SubSpace, featuring an incredibly huge playerbase that can peak at over 400 players. The zone features a myriad of game types, from a territory-control type, zombies, a dueling arena and a vast variety of other game types as well.
http://www.extreme-games.net/main/ - Home website of SSCU Extreme Games
Another incredibly large zone, focusing predominantly on its main flagging gameplay. The objective is to control all of the flags on the map at any given point, while vying for control of them with other teams.
http://chaos.sscentral.com/ - Home website of SSCX Chaos Zone
The grand daddy of all the zones, SSCX Chaos Zone is what is referred to as an SVS zone, or Standard VIE Settings. This zone is the main host of the game as it was originally meant to be played, featuring an incredibly active player base focusing around three leagues. It was originally a VIE operated zone before becoming player-ran.
Other noteworthy zones:
http://www.metalgearctf.net/news.php - SSCC Metal Gear CTF: A capture the flag type zone with an active league, its own settings, and unique graphics.
http://www.deathstarbattle.com/ - SSCU Death Star Battle: A unique zone based upon the Star Wars universe.
I cannot support this game enough, I have been an active member of its community for roughly eleven years now. It is a fantastic game which is highly addicting, and never fails to provide entertainment. We all hope to see you in game.

Wow, I downloaded and tried Subspace and I must say it is pretty addicting! I played in the majority of zones, but the only one worth spending time in is Extreme Games. The rest were pretty boring.
Here's Extreme Games website, it was pretty cool:

Thanks PC World, nice find!
