Very informative. Now curious, but very cautious about installing 7 on my Vista laptop. But anything has to be better than that Dog, Vista. I am a systems engineer and developer. Vista was the worst OS I've encountered since Windows ver 3.

No one is "making" the public try this. I am please that Microsoft is allowing the public to try this (with clear warnings that it is not for everyone). No doubt I have found some glitches, most of which I have solved, but all in all it is pretty solid, and has some nice features. It is certainly closer to excellent than to garbage IMHO.

As I have posted several time as to my not understandidng all the trouble that readers have posted about Vista, I expect to read the same miscreants are having probllems or just plain hate bashing. I only have two years of computing experience, have a very meager PC and at 65 I am over the hill as far as being in the upper half of the learning curve. As a result of my limitations I am forced to read and follow the directiions as apposed to relying on my "expertise". As with Vista, my clean install of M7 went smoothly and without a hitch. I love it and I am going to completely quit reading all the blather of the so called experts. All I can add is for peope to take the time to find out what is required, and which steps to follow in the proper sequence. I and old dummy like me can do it on the cheap machine, there is no reason in the world for any one to have the type of problems I read about!!!

Having worked in the industry for 30 years, a major rewrite of the OS is not done frequently. 32 bit OS/2 led to Windows 2000 led to NT led to XP led to Vista let to Windows 7.
Its the same old same old, jazz up the interfaces but its the same old. Explorer in Vista was horrific, do you really believe magic happens. GIGO

Oddly enough, I have a lot of fun with Beta (or even alpha) releases from MS.

I know they are unstable the moment I look at it. But it is allways fun. I am glad to see that the person who wrote the article enjoyed it.

However: MS has a habbit of starting great projects and killing them....

When Longhorn 4047 came out - I ran that on an Athlon XP 1600 with 1Gb of ram. It ran GREAT! I was dissapointed, however, when Vista was released and that 1600 looked WAY too anemic to run it.... I did end up using it on another machine (Intel C2Q) But it would have been nice to see it run on there. As it stands, that box is now just another linux box.

I hope to see Windows 7 relax a bit on the hardware requirements, but I would not speculate using the Betas... Things tend to change with the final.

Question though; Is MS going to continue with the odd little purchasing scheme? (Basic, Premium, Buisness, Ultimate) then 32bit OR 64 bit? and do we know if the Ultimate will actually yeild a real bennifit for the added money?

To my understanding the multiple os is still basically the same with premium business and ultimate both in 32b and 64b I ran a seagate 320g 7200 rpm same as the vista ultimate I have installed and only scored 3.2 with windows 7. while my score was 5.9 on vista. my graphic cards also scored lower on 7 and I run 2 xfx 260 black editions. so hardware requirements to get the upper scores look to be another vista story. Do not get me wrong I enjoy vista and I went through the same headaches as everyone else that got the program at the beginning of release. Most of the problems related to the drivers that hardware vendors sat back on and watched the nightmare unfold.. Other than these minor problems 7 is working great so far.
