Apple, be aware:
- in mobiles, brand loyalty is very slight and the investment I stand to loose with a system change is infinitely smaller on a mobile than it would be on a computer OS.
- the iPhone is pretty good but it also has a number of annoying snags and deficiencies.
I am particularly pissed in regards to locking and the incredible efforts providers undertake to actually render iPhone useless for any frequent traveller. I live one third of a year in either Switzerland, Japan and a number of other countries and am certainly unwilling to accept the insane roaming charges that would be implied in using one only carrier. Yet, even the officially "unlocked" iPhone from Hong Kong cannot be used in, say Japan, because the Apple Partner here (Soft Bank) has sneakily added software to its SIM cards to prevent usage.
I meanwhile have demoted my iPhone to iPod-status and re-commissioned my time-honored Nokia smartphone, I use 4 different prepaid SIM cards without any problems and I certainly will closely examine the promising new Palm. I am wondering how Jobs can preserve his maverick image while swallowing Apples interdependence on carriers. After finally cracking the stupid DRM deals with the Music Moguls, Apple appears to be strong enough to stand up against monopolistic dinosaurs. (The same incidentally goes for denying iTunes movies to all non-US countries in order to please the studios, stop paying the whores or you'll end up catching the craps!)

I'm a pretty loyal Windows Mobile user, however what I've seen so far is very impressive and may entice me to switch. We've even started a community over at http://www.SprintPre.net to chat about it.
