One thing this article did not mention is the use of an IFrame. The use of an IFrame can secure the frame via SSL even though the entire page is not secured. A user can right click on the IFrame portion of the page and see the security information. Saying a login is not secure because the entire page is not secure is inaccurate. Some site use this methodology to reduce the overhead of SSL and therefore speeding up the page load time.
