I was going through this list and was thoroughly pleased to see the diversity of games. But Warcraft? How in the hell is this possible. WoW is nothing more than a mass marketing ploy with a foundation based roughly on EverQuest. And if you really feel that any MMO deserves to be mentioned looked at the first generation of MMO's... I'm actually really preturbed on what kind of person decided on this list. The only logical theory I can think of is some body got paid off by Blizzard for this review.

Oh and as for the 10 million players and that being a ranking number. You're off, Blizzard has one of the top monthly subcribers. Right now the top ranking game is Maple Story, at 50million current users.

I can't even go on. I just lost all respect for PC world and had to make an account to call you out on your review being poorly researched and like I said, probably paid for by Blizzard.

p.s. the Graphics suck.

I think this list is a compilation of two entirely different lists: The most influential games and the greatest games.
Yet both lists are badly lacking. Where's Lemmings? Half-Life and especially Counter-Strike (you know, the most played online-FPS game for 10 years and running..), GTA titles, Diablo series... I'd even include Max Payne over 'Mule' (no offense, I know it's a matter of heart for the older folks; Something Sonic the Hedgehog is for me) and of course several other titles that were mentioned before.
While one should in no way ignore the importance of old genre-defining titles like some of the games you mentioned (that I've never even heard of, but I trust your judgment), they are not in any way greatest or best games of the kind. Most influential - yes. Greatest... Hells no.
For the greatest-list I'd include at least HL, CS, SC, WoW, GTA and Sims. When you talk great you talk defining a genre. Having basically a cult following. Being some people's way of life pretty much. All those titles are just that; Big and great.
For the most influential list titles like some of the older titles you mentioned along with the likes of Lemmings and Police Quest (I'd love to include the space version of the game that - as I recall - was the first of the kind but I never got past the first puzzle so I pretty much hated it).
I think this list should be remade with maybe having two lists; The greatest and the most influential. They may and will probably overlap a bit but it's ok - as long as 'Mule' is not mentioned as one of the top 10 greatest games ever made --
Of course this article like my comment is a personal opinion and should be treated as such so sorry if I came out rude.

Not a bad list, though I would have switched Starcraft for Diablo 2. Diablo 2 is an old game that still has a large following., think more people are still playing D2 than Starcraft.

Google "Starcraft Korea" and be amazed. Although I still play Diablo 2 :p

I certainly agree with having Myst on the list. There were two that I played on the C-64 / C-128 from Interplay. One was called "Dragon Wars" and the other a SciFI sort of thing called "Neuromancer". Both were really good. As for a more recent game, I would have to go for "Neverwinter Nights". It was bit linear, but fun anyway. with a good story. Another favorite would have to be "A Bards Tale". It was entertaining even if it did have little substance. Ialso had a former Arcade game for the C-64 / C-128 called "Lode Runner" which was good. I guess everybody has their favorites though and the list go really grow. :D coastie
