It looks like this review was not done carefully. it missed one of the best services: DriveHQ.com's online backup service. It is much better than most of the mentioned companies here. I am using their service now. I tried XDrive, iBackup and Mozy before. The weakness with XDrive and iBackup is their performance and reliability need a lot of improvements. Both XDrive desktop and iDrive freezes explorer frequently -- almost every time when copying large files... Overall, their service offering is still much more competitive than new start-upsl like Mozy. DriveHQ's services is even better, the pros are: nice web interface and very elegant client applications. map as local "My DriveHQ" folder; very impressive performance with caching; file versioning, backup with encryption, folder synchronization. The cons: it doesn't clearly say it's online backup service. they have bundled lots of services into one storage subscription services... but if you need more than backup, that's good.

6 month old article is hopelessly out-of-date... All of the prices and storage amounts seem to be completely wrong. I also tried the 3 sites recommended in the comments above, and they didn't seem to offer anywhere near as much free storage as a lot of the recommended sites (e.g. Mozy, IDrive MediaMax). Note of caution: MediaMax appears to be saying in the small print that you cannot download files over 10MB (e.g. half of your MP3s) with the free account. You would have to pay the $45 annual fee to download them. I am not sure if I have this correct (it was in the T & C's) as it says elsewhere that you can download 1GB a month, but doesn't specify the file size there, so I wasn't sure what their curremt policy was... PCWorld - couldn't this article be updated?

Hi Gallant --We do update articles in addition to writing new ones. I'll bring this one up as one that could use a little sprucing. Thanks for the suggestion.

[quote name='rpettinger']This review is not complete.I have been using www.iSyncData.com to backup and synchronize between my computers. It is easy. Once setup, everything is automatic. I never have to do anything. They are using Novell iFolder to provide this feature. This system automatically finds when the file is changed and uploads only the new file. I use it to synchronize files between my Mac and PC. They also support Linux. The service has been very reliable. It is unfortunate that this site was not included in the review.

DO NOT RELY ON MOZY!!! The reason for my discontent can best by illustrated by my email conversation with Mozy. If you're interested in Mozy, at least learn one ex-users opinion before you buy: http://www.firstfitn...do.com/mozy.htm . Good luck whatever you do.

The rating of GoDaddy is misleading. According to the review: "The service has a great Web interface, but its maximum storage is 10GB." I checked with GoDaddy, as I would like to be able to use this service to backup all my documents and photos in one place (about 7.5 GB). Unfortunately, GoDaddy advises that I would have to have five separate accounts at 2GB each. That would make regular backups for data over 2GB very inconvenient. I will either find another service or wait for GoDaddy to increase capacity.

http://www.adrive.com/ is new I think - 50GB but no software, so only very large files, like music videos. also www.diino.com gives you 2GB for free.

I have some doubts about the online backup services and Vista compatibility. I usually find PC World helpful on these topics, but I am disappointed not to find any recent updates, esp. since Vista has been in use for many months. I see here that requests have been made here regularly for an update on this article. Would appreciate that too.

I don't know if I trust any Website enough to store my important documents/photos/whatever. What happens if there is a huge Internet crash and then you can't retrieve your precious information at all?

Check this website http://www.binfire.com. They are in beta now and coming with a new version soon. They give 5 GBytes for free but plan to go to 25 GBytes (or even 100 GBytes)for free. They have sharing and collaboration software for free too.
