Some of the games just looking at them look scarier then the movies at the theatre.
Mortal Kombat of course I say should have topped the list as it was teh 1st to feature spine tiggling graphics of digital death...I also think MK started the whole rating system bec Nintendo failed to allow the gore in the first release bec of their family ethics. Sega allowed teh gore and sold more of its version. Nintendo after raings were released, revamped teh game an added the gore back in.
Smash TV was actually funny. And the pay was so fast you could barely see teh gore with so much explosions of blood. Street Fighter and Fatal Fury though not mentioned were pretty violent too. It just didn't have the gorey details like todays games.
Oh Coastie65 I been dying to ask...aren't you a female? If so nice to see a womans perspective on stuff.

Steve1802 rightly pointed out that I forgot to include Postal 2 on this list. Mea Culpa. Truth of the matter is that part of my brain purged itself right after playing it back in the day. Yes, it flaunted plenty of ultraviolence but it was also horribly done. (I was part of CGW, the crew that gave it the infamous zero-star review.)
That said, yes, Postal 2 earned the right to be in this list. If only for using cats as a weapon.
Other games considered, but not put on this list: Age of Conan and Carmageddon. Sue me. ;p
Seriously, though, let me know about other games that YOU would have put on the this.....and thanks for reading it!

First, let me say that it is a horrible shame what's happened as of late. A tragedy. TechieXP, I understand where you're coming from.
There are entire books, studies, and psychological tests that try to connect violent games and violent tendencies. So trying to squeeze my take into a single comment thread is a gross simplification. But here goes:
If you introduce violent ANYTHING to a kid (movies-books-Web sites, whatever!), they are bound to notice it less. Or develop a thicker skin to it. A parent's job is to intervene early on and teach a child right from wrong. Fantasy from reality.
And that's saying nothing of people that already have violent tendencies before being introduced to it (the whole nature vs. nurture debate).
Sam Kinison pointed it out best: If Charles Manson could come up with his marching orders from listening to The Beatles' Helter Skelter, they could've gotten the same message from hearing The Monkees.
Now me, I use games as a way to vent aggression that I have. Between that and working out, I actually find myself a calmer, more centered cat.

I did a lot more than 5 minutes of research. Spent my whole life playing this stuff. but thanks for pointing out that bit.

But that's a whole other story.
There were LOTs of games I wanted to include on the list (yep, Carmageddon was on that list as well) Problem was some cuts needed to be made at some point. Technically the story was originally gonna just be 10 games. Then talking with others I started riffing. At one point, my list shot up to 25 before I got it back down to what you're seeing here.
From the beginning, I knew it was an incomplete list -- hence why I was leaving it up to you guys to mix it up with me and throw out some more games. Ya'll aren't disappointing me. ;p

And you're right, BioShock would've been good (if only for the implied violence toward Little Sisters) but it has, in essence, the same sort of combat as in Condemned if you think about it.
And L4D? As awesome as that game is, you're shooting zombies, but it isn't as over-the-top gory. Dead Rising is bloodier (and that didn't make this list).
Thanks for going to the trouble of writing in.
