Sync Your Phone Wirelessly--for Free

I agree with the cons you listed, particularly the poorly designed Google address book, as compared to Outlook, and the inability to fully synchronize the reminders when syncing the calendars of the iPhone and Google.
One additional BIG problem is that the photos associated to the address book in your iPhone are not synchronized; actually they are erased by the process since the Google contacts list will overwrite the iPhone.
I will continue doing the syncing process on my PC. With the free program called Google Calendar Sync you can set your Google calendar to automatically sync with Outlook, and then set the phone to sync via iTunes with Outlook's calendar - done!
