would it cripple AT&T? Sure... Verizon? Doubtful... even Sprint has a more extensive 3G network than AT&T and Sprint is pretty small compared to the others.

What difference does it make if you're on the net with the phone or tethered to a computer? Tethering doesn't increase the number of users accessing the net it just provides a different method of connecting. If I wasn't tethered (like I am right now) I'd be using the phone itself to browse but it's still just 1 person, me, on the system. How does that overwhelm the network?

Because evil users like me would plug it into a router and share the connection among multiple machines.

Also, your iPhone will only play low resolution video from selected sources. Your computer can stream hi-definition video content from anywhere. You can download DVD ISO images and all kinds of 'big' things. Heck, just 'security' patches and virus definitions to keep up with the flood of new malware for the windoze platform could be enough to white out the whole network. Let alone what happens when your windoze machine joins a botnet.

Thats why I ask questions, I sometimes learn something. I dont know that there are too many "evil" users tethering because I get pretty good performance on my tethered computer (Acer netbook) with a plain Jane 3G (not S) iphone. As I live in a burg with no wi;fi nearby and the hi speed providers bleed subscribers dry with fees tethering is my only way to get my computer on the net . Evil users please reign in your diabolical impulses!
