Sirius isn't going to die because of Apple - the Dept of Justice and FCC's foot dragging exercise, in addition to the lack of new car sales has killed the company like a cancer. The outstanding debt load is rediculous due to inflated contract negotiations and equipment. These two companies continued to pour money into their respective programming services and equipment (not to mention the millions in advertising campaigns to battle for consumers) when they could have been a SINGLE huge player in the media space.
To me the only way out is to expand the technology, not throttle it back. They should offer a satellite TV service better than their crippled and expensive TV service now. While this is a costly venture, it is necessary to break into a market which most companies (including Apple) really have no intentions of getting into (satellite TV) and could even branch out into GWAN services (which could potentially eclipse even 4G for coverage). The triple crown of wireless TV/RADIO/INTERNET is wide open and the first carrier to truly offer it en masse will be the winner since ultimately, portability will be the key to success.

Wireless (Apple wifi)is impractical for automobile applications unless your vehicle has an access point (an expense in Chryslers that no doubt is more costly than Sirius/month). Just see these as coexisting technologies honestly and if Sirius folds it really won't be from competitors as much as internal issues.

I don't see Apple doing away with sattelite radio for a couple of reasons. First I didn't have to pay $299 for a phone since I use my phone to talk not to do anything else. Second I can listen to the same station anywhere in the country while driving from state to state. My understanding of wifi is you must be within range. Last but not least with XM now at 4.99 per month it is just a better deal.

Wow! How innovative!

Uh...wouldn't a device from Radio Shack have already done the job this article seems to believe? --

I agree with RJP370

I live in Canada and have been a subscriber to Satalite Radio almost since it's inception. I have a Pioneer Car Stereo and I love the ability of being able to drive all over the Country Canada and the U.S. and listen to my favorite stations without worrying about being within range of a WiFi signal or not. Even when I lose my Cell phone signal I still have my Satalite Radio. How is Apple or any other WiFi ever going to compete with that?

Simple...They won't and can't. Leave Satalite Radio and T.V. alone and pick on something more constructive. These 2 technologies are great and I wouldn't want to be without either one. I use my Cell for talking PERIOD I hate texting. if someone does text me, I call them and ask them if they forgot how to dial my number. I do have "Hands Free" in the Car for Safety sake which is Blue tooth. But that's about as far as I go.

People have being connecting IPods to their car stereo for many years now. The best part is that while is connected it will charge my IPod. Try to do that with a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth and have a working phone when you need it. Beside Satellite Radio music is much more higher quality than any MP3 file of 128 bits.
