Good work, Twitterologist. Makes a lot of sense.

What's to get? Unless you
a) have a business are trying to promote
b) are a blogger
c) want to share every inane detail of your life with the world
d) have no life
or
e) are a narcissist,
then there Twitter is a waste of time.... Sorry I've checked it out....Its stupid unless you have a practical need.....I don't. And I don't need to know when my best friend eats a burrito....maybe you have time and a desire for suck knowledge....

How amusing: you aren't dissing those who don't appreciate Twitter it--we merely don't get it and should get a clue. This arrogance among users who think 140-character masterpieces make them the new cognoscenti is one of the biggest reasons (along with all the fascinating information about which parking lot you're pulling out of now) have driven me away. But I'm not speaking for anyone else and, unlike you, wouldn't dream of lumping together so many of us who find it a great yawn.

"but didn't likely contribute much to the Twitterverse."
Much like this column, it would appear.
People don't use it because it's too chaotic for the most part, and there are other things out there that do the job without the need to "Follow people. A lot of people." and get lost in the backgound noise.
It's not that they don't "get it" it's that they don't particularly care for it. There's a difference. One you obviously missed in your zeal to throw insults at those who decided it wasn't their thing.
'journalists' like yourself need to take a refresher course on just what it is you're supposed to be doing. That's the problem with employing bloggers. Instead of unbiased factual reporting, we get wannabe op-ed columnists who don't bother to 'report' things in an even light.

Whatever. Yea, let me "follow" "a lot" of the 18 MILLION Twitter doofuses and try and figure out which one of these dolts actually has something insightful to say...in 140 characters or less. C'mon. There are literally hundreds of millions of web pages out there for me to peruse. I am sure that I can find far more places to find insightful information with far less effort than to sift through the droves of dweebs on Twitter.

While I agree with most of what you're saying here, I think you're disallowing for the fact that some people "get it", and it still doesn't resonate. Further, you're presuming that Twitter does in fact have a place in everyone's lives, and it just takes time for them to realize it. This is not necessarily the case.
You mentioned that there are several other social networks out there, and I think that's part of the reason for the attrition rates that Twitter is experiencing. People have seen this technology before. It's been done. Mind you, if Twitter can do it better, or attract more users, then I say more power to 'em.
I've actually been on the fence about whether or not to get an account. I think I signed up at one point but I never spent any time figuring it out. I just haven't found a particular use for it, personally. I posted a bit about this on my blog at approachingtheta.com, albeit with the same but of vinegar that you did, just aimed in the opposite direction.
Time will tell whether or not it does maintain its resonance with the public though.

Sorry - I see the whole forced community thing as inane. I use my puter to stay in contact with people via e-mail - sometimes strangers as well as friends. It's my choice. Nobody can 'connect' to me unless I want the connection. Everything today is a "community" - even recipe sites for cryin' out loud. "Sallie has added a new recipe"... EXCUSE me?
I'm happy to post something - and if someone else posts something that interests me - I'll respond to them. Or not - and vice versa. I belong to various forums - was even an asst. manager on one - but when I sign on a site I don't want to be pestered with e-mails telling me that one of the participants burped.

Tell you what I think.
I've been a computer user for almost 40 years. Scary.
I think twitter sucks. Every time I attempt to use it, I find it non intuitive, clumsy, and just plain ridiculous.
I figured out why. It's designed for computer illiterates that use computers.
Guess thats Web 3.0.

I sort of still think Twitter is boring, so I suppose I am in the category of those who don't "get it." It seems unless you are following somebody with some modicum of fame and then get noticed yourself by messages to such a person there really isn't that much going on to follow.
I'm not really that interested in following movie star or novelist's tweats.
Maybe it's more exciting for groupies than for ordinary people?

For those of you who actually believe this idiotic article and still think Twitter is an ingenious idea before its time... http://www.youtube.c...h?v=PN2HAroA12w

I also note that the setup for these idiotic self-serving stories is that only the thumbs up count gets displayed.

I've registered with Twitter a year ago and quit it cuz I didn't see any benefit there. With the recent "international buzz" going around; I re-registered with Twitter and I'm on it for last 3 weeks or so. I've posted to several social media forums "I don't get this! Help me to understand Twitter!". Everyone started to come and tell me the benefits (like you just did with this post), but know one was capable of giving a clear explanation about a "unique benefit" of Twitter. I'm not a social media newbie. I am using Facebook, LinkedIn, StumbleUpon and many more tools for couple of years, and I am perfectly clear about what each of those services "stand" for. You say Twitter is a great way to gather new articles, information etc. Doesn't StumbleUpon do the same? You say it's a great way to stay in touch with people. Facebook does the same. Why do I want to braodcast "I'm at Sanfransisco airport right now" to 100,000 people who follow me? I mean who cares, whether I'm at the Airport or somewhere else? If there's somebody truely care about where I am right now; they can give me a call or text me.
For me, TWitter reminds the "Emporeror's new dress" story. No body like to speak up and say "This is just B/S", cuz then you will appear as a social media noob. So, everyone writes about the magic of Twitter, just to be in line with rest of the bunch.
BTW, I'm @AmiSampath on Twitter, and I will continue to be there for few months and see if my attitudes will change. If I change my mind; I'll let you all know.
