I could see how this could be true, the cloud will change everything.

I doubt it and I hope not. The beauty of consoles vs. PC games is I know I can buy a console game, take it home, and it will work.

I am sure that cloud computing has its purpose, but hopefully not for this. I rarely play online games, so why do I want a console that has to be connected to the "cloud" every time I want to play something. Also, that probably means that I need to pay a monthly fee in order to keep this "cloud" (that I don't even want) up and running.
Also, as mpheadley states, part of why I play games on a console is to avoid having to make sure that my PC is compatible with the game. Also, this way I don't have to worry about Sony installing a root kit on my PC. Plus, I don't have to upgrade my PC at least once per year.
It is fine with me if the current generation of consoles last until 2013. But, I doubt it'll be that long. Each vendor wants to stay ahead of the other and with the money involved, more vendors may join the race (Apple?)

in response to:

2. There's quite a few games that do look significantly worse than your letting on. With PC's getting more computing power than consoles, people are going to start seeing this, I know I have between my Xbox 360 and my PC (a first generation tri-core and outdated graphics just can't beat today's overclocked quad core and new graphics). Specifically the differences can be seen games like Oblivion, Mass Effect, and FEAR 2.

3. Whether or not there are new consoles to support the next move into definition (probably 4K or 3D TV), those TVs are going to come out regardless, seeing as they're already investing time and money into those technologies.

Interesting Article. I still believe that Onlive will work. I guess we'll see once beta testing begins this summer. There are already so many fans of the Onlive idea, just search google or visit a site like the Onlive forum. Sure this doesn't mean it will work, but if it does it should take off.

Next generation ? Why not give the present generation some time. The PS3 was introduced in Nov. '06 and has been around for less than 3 years. The younger generation needs to learn to enjoy what is out there. Instead, they jump on the latest and greatest, play it for a while and then they are ready for something new. Developers are not going to be quick on playing that game, and what good is the new latest and greatest console, if there is nothing much to play on it. At this time and for the forseeable future, I see no need for new consoles, except for maybe a redesign of the Xbox 360 to allow for better cooling. There are some upcoming titles that may help the PS3, Uncharted II, FF XIII, & Rise of the White Wolf : The Witcher ( Not for the kids ). Talk of new generation consoles, is no encouragement to game developement for existing consoles. coastie65

coastie... this article in suggesting that there may never be another generation of consoles. I think what people are saying is that consoles have a legitimate place and that eventually there will be another generation. I am in no hurry for the next gen. But, a lot of people have switched to consoles for a reason (or multiple reasons). First, you don't have to worry about compatibility. If you buy a game for the 360, then it'll work on the 360. Second, consoles are cheaper than PCs. Third, you don't have to upgrade them every year in order to continue using them. Fourth...

My 360 has locked up a few times. But, if you are playing games under Windows, then you are probably used to lock ups or BSOD anyways...

Gaming on the cloud is a pipe dream. Things haven't changed since pong was introduced to homes. Not that I am opposed to progress but most people like have media in hand and playing when the want. Not everyone plays online. Besides I know the DVD will stream well on my console but what about over the net. Even netflix hasn't got that perfected.

Onlive won't work unless Obama invests a lot of money into internet infrastructure; you practically need FiOS to use it, I know that my 3mbps/1.5mbps connection isn't enough for it. You'd have only people in cities using it, leaving a lot of people who simply cannot use the service.

WTH? Weren't critics writing the obituary for PC gaming LAST year? Need to quit flip-flopping.
You can't have both, since the gaming market continues to be one of the few growth industries today...

Actually, I'm semi equal opportunity. I game on the PC, PS2, and PS3. This PC will handle pretty much everything out there so no need for upgrades ( Upgraded to the max anyway with the present MOBO ). I agree there is a place for each platform and I enjoy the PC and consoles equally. coastie

Game consoles are cheap toys. And do not match the display abilities of PCs. Period. In my case, I just get them all. Top-of-the-line PC gaming, and all the consoles. But also can afford it. I wouldn't care less if there were no more game consoles. As a matter of fact, I'll save money, not having to buy games for the PC, PS3 ,and Xbox360. The Wii, what's that?

I know what you mean, although the last game I bought for the PC was "The Witcher" in early Nov. '07. " Fallen Angel: Sacred 2 " is out for the PC and coming to the PS3 & Xbox360. I have played through Sacred & it's expansion Sacred Underground on the PC, but haven't settled on which platform to play 2 on. I just upgraded the Video Card from an 8600GT to a 9800GT, so shouldn't let a good graphics card go to waste. You keep rolling out new platforms and you are going to start having problems with the developers.

Period is the word my man. Look at half life 2 that game is so old but man the graphics are still spectacular it still stands as of today. either valve keeps upgrading the engine or video cards are too powerful. Try playing it at 8XMSAA at 1080p with ultra high settings. It just looks good. This has to be the best of the best pc game ever created by valve. and with half life 2 ep1 and 2 they improved on the engine a bit more. It just looks amazing.

One benefit that pc's have over consoles is this. Unlike consoles PC is a one platform. So there is no ps1,ps2,ps3,xbox,xbox360,gamecube,will. Its just one Platform. I have games that were in the ps2 generation to ps3 and 360 all in one platform. Even the ps2 generation games that are on the pc looks very good. and yet ps2 never had any hi def capability.

And added to that assault. PC enthusiast hardware is getting cheap and getting powerful at the sametime. otherwords you are paying less for more and more and more. All it requires is knowing where to shop and maximize savings and call it a day!!.

I gave away my ps2 and not going to buy a 360 or a ps3 for this sole reason. And now with digital distribution which eliminates having the stupid optical disc in the drive just drove pc gaming home. Never have i seen in time in history of pc hardware getting so advanced for the consumers. In fact i am blown away how powerful these video cards are getting same with the memory and mb. CPU's thats the only area i am not quite impressed even with the nehalem quad core with hyper threading technology. But i am very impressed with the bios of what it has.

Not including "consumer retail pc's" because THEY SUCK lol.

I think the biggest benefit of consoles is probably (at least in the 360's case) the online service...just me personally. PC you don't have to pay though I suppose. If console companies were smart, they'd sell upgraded consoles rather than making a whole new system to keep up with technology.

i suppose but then you have steam that has achievements. Games that you buy off steam anyways and the service is free. and don't forget about the "weekend sale" "President sale" "Labor weekend sale" "valve just want to have a happy just because sale". Thats one thing i love about steam. what is up with the happy sales being soo frequent. I just bought left for dead for 29 bucks lol. There was even a one day sale that they slashed prices on the whole steam store. "25% off on every game for one day sale"
