Power to you! Remember our deal: when I find out how to put Windows on a bootable USB key, I shall share the info, and likewise, I count on you my friend when you stumble onto the solution to share it here with the rest of our PCWorld Community. I'm with you on that. And also with Linux too!
See, friends have common goals and help each other. Cool eh?
And if it is a beta or demo version, there are no licensing issues I suppose? I get free demos by attending free TechNet seminars, at any city near you, courtesy of Microsoft. (Lunch and goodies too!) But I mainly attend for the educational value. One can learn all kinds of things by attending seminars, from anybody and everybody! Sun Microsystems, Oracle, IBM, you name it...

I only use non-generated licenses when I get something to work...IE I'm going to try before I buy. Otherwise I'll always buy. (In the case of experimenting, USB version of windows, I typically let it just say my Windows isn't validated because I'll end up deleting it in a couple days anyways).
I have a Windows Vista key for ultimate, lost my XP key...but I believe the side of my dell and gateway have one...and several keys for Windows 7 RC. Just waiting for Windows 7 final keys...
My current project I think will be getting Windows 7 onto a USB drive, should be interesting.

In the Macintosh world, mid-March to Mid-may is only two months.
When will Microsoft patch the vulnerability revealed at Ptn2Own.

Actually I think you missed my point. And Iphone does use OSX as its OS. Its a bit stripped down..just like Windows Mobile is a version of Windows CE I believe...
Anyway what I was trying to say...iPhone and IPod drove up Mac sales...as I see it as the 'keep it in the family' scenario. Even though both devices work with Windows as long as you have iTunes installed (which I think is a scam), some people who purchase said devices would decide to get a Mac as well because of familiy compatibility. Just like with MSFT products which I tested this theory once. If you take a PC..and make sure your hardware is on MSFT's compatibility list...and you only install MSFt software on it...you will never have an issue out the system providing you keep all programs up to date.
A family of products work better together.
If I had an iPod or iPhone, I would certainly rather use them with a Mac, versus using a Windows PC.
Before 2006...Macs average sales were about 5 million units per year. Mac sales are about double now at about 2 million per quarter and still rising...however 1st quarter of this year...Mac sales slipped 16%...and for a company like Apple...that is a huge number for small marketshare...while Dell had a 22% drop in sales...however Dell usually sells 15 million computers in a quarter...
This is the software that runs Iphone:

The default Home screen of the iPhone shows most of the applications provided by Apple. Users can download additional applications from the App store, create Web Clips, and rearrange the icons as they please.iPhone OS is the operating system that runs on the iPhone (both models) and the iPod Touch. It is based on a variant of the same basic Mach kernel that is found in Mac OS X. iPhone OS includes the software component "Core Animation" from Mac OS X v10.5 which, together with the PowerVR MBX 3D hardware, is responsible for the interface's smooth animations. The operating system takes up less than half a GB of the device's total storage (4, 8, or 16 GB).[64] It is capable of supporting bundled and future applications from Apple, as well as from third-party developers. Software applications cannot be copied directly from Mac OS X but must be written and compiled specifically for iPhone OS.
Like the iPod, the iPhone is managed with iTunes version 7.3 or later, which is compatible with Mac OS X version 10.4.10 or later, and 32-bit or 64-bit Windows XP or Vista.[65] The release of iTunes 7.6 expanded this support to include 64-bit versions of XP and Vista,[66] and a workaround has been discovered for previous 64-bit Windows operating systems.[67] Apple provides free updates to the iPhone's operating system through iTunes, in a similar fashion to the way that iPods are updated.[64] Security patches, as well as new and improved features, are released in this fashion.[68] For example, iPhone 3G users initially experienced dropped calls until an update was issued.[69][70]

thanks for correcting me and yes you are right " Apple also produces specialized versions of Mac OS X for use on three of its consumer devices; the iPhone OS for the iPhone and iPod Touch,^[6]^ and an unnamed version for the Apple TV.^[7]^"and so i guess the net applications might include them in the mac osx catergory then ( don't own a ipod or iphone )

Hey thanks for the tip! Frankly, I've never thought about installing Windows onto a USB memory key. Why? because Windows adapts itself to the hardware, and a USB key is to boot windows anywhere? Which is a misnomer IMHO. For that I use Knoppix, to boot onto anything, and get to any filesystem to do maintenance... ;) I've yet to find some hardware Knoppix couldn't plug-and-play with...
Also, a USB key is far slower than a true HDD. With performance in mind first and foremost, that is why I never considered installing Windows into a USB key...
I suppose there might be even more ways with EFI, to boot whatever, whereever... Yet another interesting thing to investigate.

Maybe its my computer.
I tried to install XP into my USB drive, it installed. ( I tired several times, as early as 1 year ago )
After the initial boot, it disconnected itself from USB
( my computer has no hard drive, everything is USB )
My goal is to create a universal USB XP that will work either high end and low end computer. ]:)

Sounds like it switched from the BIOS USB handling to the Windoze driver USB handling, and Windoze didn't already have its own partition mounted through USB to carry on reading files.
My take on it would be to run one of the 'minimalist' universally booting Linux thumbs with a Windoze VM.
You could even launch the VM session when X comes up.
Of course, if you got used to VirtualBox, and decided you liked OpenOffice and Firefox, most people would just use Linux and not notice any difference.

@Evildave
I am already running Windows XP on virtualbox, that is way too easy. ( USB XP is my side project )
Exactly like you say, I don't miss XP at all. ( only when I play Yu Gi Oh online and update my MP3 playlist on Creative Zen. Both doesn't run well under Wine. )
There is a true reason why I wanna run XP under USB drive, but that would be way off topic.
I will wait and see if Windows 7 is able to do that.
I will stop here. ]:)
