I would much rather see cable companies working toward getting rid of cable boxes and making some centralized device. The most inconvenience is all the boxes on my entertainment center. I would like a DVR that I can put in my basement where my cable comes in. Plug the DVR into my home network and have access to the files both inside and outside the house. Tivo right now is the closest with their series 3. It is not a centralized server but has a built in web server and cable card slots. If Time Warner had a DVR with web access I would be fine.

Has it occurred to anyone that the reason that multi-Tera-byte hard drives are popular (see the advert in the right column) is that folks are recording TV shows? Any show I want to record is compressed via DivX, but only after I spend 10 minutes editing out all the commercials (no fast-forwarding for me!). A 1-hour show is 45 minutes (about 300MB) without commercials when I play them back. A 1-TB hard drive holds thousands of hours of entertainment. And, when I cancel my Time-Warner subscription, I'll still have all my old TV shows.

I wonder what's 'controversial' about it? Lots of cable companies offer 'DVR-like' services.
And what're things like HULU, if not a web-based DVR services?
Click, there's John Stewart (24 hours delayed) giving you the news more people turn to than really ought to.
Spend the extra cash you'd spend on cable and DVR service on a GOOD internet connection, and you really don't need cable.

Great article! Have to say I’m with Jeff on this one though. Sounds like a great idea since I wouldn’t have to mess with the actual DVR and what not. The hardware’s not horrible, but less is better where I’m sitting in this case. At the end of the day though it means putting my trust in Cablevision that they’ll actually care about their customers (who like fast forwarding past commercials), and not their bottom line (cutting deals with the networks = required commercial watching), and I'm just not confident the customers are going to win out.
Like most people, I can’t STAND watching commercials and absolutely LOVE my DVR for that reason. That said, having endured Cablevision’s horrible customer service in the past, I can only imagine what this is going to look like down the road, post-court decisions.
