You've provided some nice info and screen shots, but it's not really a fair comparison since you own/use an iPhone. This sounds more like why any iPhone user shouldn't make the switch. And to be honest, I wouldn't expect an iPhone user to change over.

Sure the iPhone seems easier to use than the Pre, you have been using your iPhone longer.

If you drive a car all your life and then drive a 4x4 truck, it's going to be a different experience.

It's also been mentioned all over, that there will be an app for a virtual keyboard. They (Palm) had these for the Treo that allowed moving keys all around and changing colors/shapes to your liking.

At any rate, thanks for the nice screen shots, they will tide me over until tomorrow.

A big reason for me putting together this slide show was to show areas where you'll need to re-learn/re-adjust to if you're going from iPhone to Pre. The comparison to the iPhone is appropriate, I feel, since, whether we like it or not, the iPhone is what all other smart phones are compared against.

I'm pulling for the Pre. I hope it does well.

The Pre rocks! I picked mine up this morning. I was 13th in line, and they were sold out after about 2 hours.

The keyboard works better than my Treo's.

The speed of apps and internet is great!

It also looked like a few apps were added to the store while I was browsing.

Great job Palm and Sprint!

I have an iPhone and don't plan on buying the new Pre. I have to admit, however, that this article seems biased. I can't imagine anyone who can use a touchscreen with the same speed as a tactile keyboard. I don't even think it's open for debate.

Either you are confused or I am reading your article
wrong. But you make mention that going
to the previous song and going to the previous photo involve opposite
gestures. You say to go to previous song
you gesture R-L and for previous photo you gesture L-R. I tried this out and for both, to go back,
you gesture L-R.
Or maybe you meant that it doesn’t make sense to have a
person gesture L-R on the screen to go to a previous song/photo, yet on the ‘gesture
pad’, you go R-L. if that is the case, I
think you are nitpicking the Pre.

To a non-biased person (and yes, you are biased, but you
cant help it), it makes sense. When you
are looking at photos or listening to music, you are doing it much like you
read, going from left to right to view new photots/songs. So if I want to view the previous photo I am
going to grab the current one, and throw it to the right.

The gesture pad on the Pre is made for going back in the
actual program as opposed to shuffling individual items. So if I am listening viewing photos and I use
the gesture pad to go back, I am not going back to view the previous photo, I
am going back to the previous ‘screen’.

while there were some interesting insights, I had the feeling that this comparison came to two conclusions, the pre is not an iphone and the author is too conformable with the iphone.
it seemed that the author criticised the pre for not being or behaving like the iphone.
so, I reckon this was not exactly a balanced review

To everyone claiming bias: please re-read the first slide:

"If you’re already accustomed to the iPhone but considering moving to the Pre, you can expect to relearn some actions."

It was written from an iPhone user's perspective. It's all about the adjustments an iPhone user will have to make. That was kind of the point. I said it on the first slide.

Sorry if I'm peeved, but I have little patience for shouts of "bias!" especially when I state the perspective and purpose of the slideshow on page one.

Have you ever tried using an iPhone's on-screen keyboard for more than two minutes at your local AT&T store? It takes some getting used to, but as you adjust to it and learn to trust the error correction, you can move quickly.

And as I said in the story, whether you prefer software keyboards or physical keyboards on a phone is strictly a personal preference issue. To say otherwise doesn't take into account others' tastes and preferences.

There is so much crap coming from all sides of this phone war it's getting silly.
At this point I wouldn't be surprised to see a riot break out in the streets over it.

This was actually the first article I came across that had any useful info on the Pre before the launch.

The good news is, I got my Pre early Saturday and couldn't be happier!

Then why call the article, 'iPhone 3G and Palm Pre: Head-to-Head' if your just showing the 'adjustments' an iPhone user would have to make on the Pre?

If I see an article entitled, "Camaro Vs. Mustang: Head-to-Head", I expect it to be comparing the two. Not an essay about how one would need to adjust to the Camaro if they are coming from a Mustang.
