AT&T Tight-Lipped on iPhone 3GS's Lack of MMS and Tethering

Most of us would like to have tethering for occasional use. It would offer an escape from those hotel and airport WiFi fees. It would also come in handy whenever there is an ISP outage. I don't think it would be practical for every day use because of relatively slow speed vs. WiFi.
So it would be nice to have but wouldn't be turned on very often. Therefore it wouldn't be worth a large additional monthly payment. I think maybe $5 or $10 per month could be OK but certainly not $20 to $40. Also hate the fact that carriers like AT&T seem to want a toll booth erected everywhere for everything. They need to take a page from Apple's book and start dropping prices.

I received an MMS on July 2nd to my iphone (with latest 3.0 firmware). The link to 'viewmymessage' takes me to their website, but the message id and pass don't work. I called AT&T and they said that MMS isn't working until the end of the summer. This is crazy. They will charge me 25/c for the SMS link to a website that supposedly hosts the MMS but doesn't work. Can you believe this?
