I had the same problem. I called apple and was on the phone for 30 min when my call got dropped. Apple has really dropped the ball on this one. I'm dissapointed. Since Apple can't do this right I will help. Make sure your quicktime, Itunes, and firmware are up to date or else your phone won't work after updating.

Ditto,
I got halfway through the update then got an unknown error message...kind of reminded me of my MS days!
My iphone says it's only available for emergency calls now and Apple Care says the problem is due to overwhelming number of users trying to download. Great planning!!!
This really does remind me of Microsoft during every glitch! ouch! my phone is unusable so business for me is shutdown until as apple tech support advises, I am able to find a time when less people are trying to download 3.0 and try again. I image that will be the day 3.1 comes out!
Beware and thanks for nut'n

Downloaded 3.0 without a glitch. Actually downloaded faster than previous updates and the entire process went well. Only one glitch, upon boot the iPhone's language was not set to English. Go to settings... General... scroll down to International/Language... Problem solved!

Patience. It took me a few tries over the span of about 3 hours to even get to log in for the update.
Once I was able to log in, smooth download and install (although it did take about 30 minutes in all.)
So yea, no doubt the server is way overloaded now, but in time, there should be no problem. Today, a long line. Next week, no sweat.
If you try to update any apps, once you've got 3.0 up and running, you will have to log into the iTunes app store and there will be further delays because now, among other things, with 1-click purchases, the iTunes store agreement has been updated (its 26 pps if you want to print it.) So, not only will you have to log into the store, but wait for the update message to load -- and here will be further delays, at least today - and then, once it's loaded, accept the new terms and conditions.
So, yea, it's not just 3.0 that is causing a traffic jam on the servers, but a few other updates that are spawned in its wake.
This will sort itself out.
Patience.

Which is a big reason why I generally do not go for things on "release day". :)
The other is that I tend to like to give them a little bit of time to maybe fix some bugs.
