"There you have it... the VERY first line of the article.... "

Yes it does say that. But it also said "researchers charged today". Just because researched have accused MS of doing it does not make it so.

They also stated that it is a bug caused by incomplete downloads of patches and a reboot. And yet they have not been able to reproduce this bug. This Livingston guy even said he thought it was an error caused by overloading of MS servers with the recent abundance of patches.

I've never had this problem happen to me. I have my settings to notify me of new updates and I approve the download and the installation. Nothing happens without me approving it. I do the "custom" update where I can select which updates I download. If I don't want it, I don't even let it download. Period.

Guilty until proven innocent right? Thats how this country works......sadly.

I guess you didn't really read the article.....

The article doesn't explicitly state that MS is purposely installing updates without permission (MS was accused)...... it's a bug due to unfinished downloading of updates. Interpret it differently if you like.

I do have contact with more than 3 computers.....not sure where you got that idea. So quick to down-play my computer experience......very nice of you. And I'm not saying that I'm the most experienced tech on the planet. You're very imaginative you know.... I would love to be the smartest person in the world, but it's just not gonna happen. There's A LOT of people that know more than me, no doubt about it. I'm not saying the problem "can't" exist, it does exist for some people. I'm just saying that it's a BUG. Just like the article is stating. It's probably not intentional.

Supporting "thousands" of computers is great. I'm sure you've had loads of different experiences doing so. That doesn't make you better than anyone else.

And before you try to "learn" me that you're being sarcastic, I already know.

But, since you're not following this topic, I'll see you around.

I've acknowledged this was a "bug" and said it updated drivers & crashed my new laptop while on the road twice now.

You have been wasting my time for two days because you read something wrong?!?!?!?

YHGTBFKM.
LOL... you go boy... you just keep thinkin we're all the same... LOL

(ps - obv. the system had a bug and sent me the notif anyway)

"I've acknowledged this was a "bug""

Then why are you still arguing? BUG = unintentional....accident.....not deliberate.....unplanned.

That's the point!

Why even beat this horse anymore?

This needs to be locked already......

@ Quackadilly....

That's what's made no sense....

To me, it's important that people know this BUG does exist... because it DOES kill noteboooks on the road and affects them disproportionately

It's also important that people know others have experienced the problem so it can be looked into.... and so that others may decide to choose to do updates ENTIRELY MANUALLY versus risk having WinUpdate render their laptop worthless when they're 1,000 miles from their disks, support person, etc. and may be relying on that single computing resource while away...

And even though YOU made a mistake and have NO VESTED INTEREST, you take this bizarre position of self-appointed authority and tell me (a highly educated and seasoned IT Professional) that I'm lying and done something wrong.

And even tho we've established it was YOUR BAD... you're still smug and refuse to leave it alone....

LOL - and speaking of bugs... WHY AM I STILL GETTING NOTIFICATIONS?!?!?"!?!?

Wasn't disputing that there is a bug.

MY statement was that MS is not doing it intentionally. It was clearly stated that it happens to some people. I never denied that.

Not sure what my mistake was..... My point was that it was not intentional.... clearly. I really don't care if you are "a highly educated and seasoned IT Professional"...that means squat right now.

My bad? We've established that? Really? When? My bad, for trying to clarify the article to you?

You have absolutely no evidence that I'm "wrong".....all of your posts have been mostly deleted, why? Did you realize that you were blabbing about nothing just for the sake of arguing?

My point was VERY clearly stated in my very 1st post. Can you honestly say that MS was doing this on purpose? If not then just stop because we would be in agreement

I get a newsletter from Windows Secrets in the UK, a major portion of which was devoted to this self same thing: updates being downloaded without permission by Microsoft. The Brits are complaining about this: Windows Secrets' article on why this is happening is worth a read So PC World's blog is right - it IS happening and causing some folk problems.

Yes, it is happening to some people. I did mention that right?

But there is a difference between "bug" and "intentional".

Bug is accidental.

Intentional is, well, intentional.
