Maybe they did it to cause a bit of a stir, hoping for a bit of viral marketing. When that didn't happen, they pulled the ad under the pretense that it was offending people, knowing that websites like pcworld.com would run the story and give them a bit of extra promotion.
Think about it - now more people are seeing the advert, plus MS look like the good guys for "listening to user feedback".
Genius.

"I for one think Microsoft should honor there word. This wasn't your fault. The blame is with Microsoft. I am a student about to graduate from Kaplan University with an Associate Degree in Networking. Shame on you, Microsoft."
What are you babbling about?

Personally, I've seen far worse ads and such and so has everyone else. The same people complaining about this are the ones that probably complained that Loony Toons and Tom & Jerry are scarring to a child and have spawned the world of The Wiggles, Teletubbies, and Dora the Explorer.
This generation needs to grow up; it's perfectly acceptable to make completely inappropriate jokes and do them as well, but not okay for them to be displayed by someone else. Afraid to face what you and everyone around you is doing because you know you're not proud of it.

aaaaaah SNAP! nice one dom!
I'm not a microsoft basher, but I do think that they are a very sneaky company. It's a bit unrelated to IE, but I think they're trying really hard not to give up their near-monopoly status with PC's. C'mon, they're charging $200 dollars or so for a mediocre operating system! There has to be something wrong here!

Get ready for Ian Paul's next hack 'article;' Does Microsoft owe us an apology?
The reason she's throwing up, Ian, is that she sees her husband's using Internet Explorer 8!
When an ad can clearly have such an interpretation, it's poor advertising.
Poor Microsoft. Always trying to be cool.
