Hi,

I just wanted a list of the things I should do, and how often I should do them, to keep my PC/Laptop running smoothly. Stuff like de-frag, disk cleanup, cleaning registry, running anti-virus etc. Please include even the most elementary of tasks (even cleaning tips are welcome).

Hi ruption and welcome to the forum,
We all have our own ideas about when to do what, but generally speaking i would say

1.delete temp files daily
2.Your Antivirus should be updated often throughout the day,and should be the FİRST thing you do after loging in.(mine downloads updates every few minutes automatically,

3.NO cleaning of the Registry is required, especially Not by people new to computers,so i would recommend against it.My laptop is 3 years plus old and has never been touched by registry cleaners, but runs fast and very smoothly indeed.

4.how often i defragment depends on how often i have downloaded, and uninstalled programs.but generally speaking about every 3 weeks or so.
5.Again generally speaking,i Clean my disc 3 times a week or so,and make sure the check for the Recycling Bin to be emptied, and temp internet files are checked.
6. Occasionally go to Start>Run,type %temp% click ok.The page that opens will have your temp folders.Delete the lot.You may get a warning that some cannot be deleted, that's fine leave those and delete the rest.

7.Windows Add/Remove Programs, does Not do a very thorough clean up,therefore i use http://www.revounins...e_download.html that does a much better job of deleting programs, and therefore removes more traces of uninstalled programs(and that of course affects, the running of your pc.)

Hope all that helps.

thanks a mil!!!!, and any other suggestions about general pc/laptop upkeep would be great, from cleaning to the most advanced stuff (which owners should generally be aware of)

Hi :

Other than defragging a computer, most of my
general maintenance of a computer is done by using
the FREE "ATF Cleaner ( ver 3 )" program,
developed by antiSPYWARE Expert "A Tribune" and
available at his Site at
http://www.atribune....ntpage&Itemid=1 .

You are very welcome,
This http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner CCleaner(FREE) is also recommended by many,it's said to be gentle, however i have never tried it.

One other thing you could do,is remove Java İnternet Temp files as they are a source of infection as well.
Control Panel>Open Java,on the General tap at the 'temp internet files entry, click on 'settings' Uncheck the box'keep temp files on my computer' click 'delete files' wait for it to finish click ok,click 'apply, click ok again.

As i understand some programs may require that you keep Java temp files,if so you can always re-check that box.

It doesn't hurt to get some compressed air and clean the insides out on occasion. Dusty fans are loud and can cause overheating problems.

Actually, what maintenance you perform depends greatly on where you surf the net. i.e., some go for porno, music, photos, information, etc. The more questionable site you visit, the more likely you will need daily maintenance.
