Firefox is the winner hands down! I don't think the people who still like IE7 read the article on this very site about how much faster patches are put out for firefox over IE7. Firefox and opera were the first browsers to have tabs so Bill Gates decided to make them his own creation in IE7.

I am currently using MSN Explorer. In fact every computer in the business has MSN Explorer loaded and is used as the exclusive business browser. MSN Explorer uses the illustrious IE6 as the engine for the browser. I know, I know, such a terrible browswer. But guess what, we have never had a browser related virus on any computer. True, we avoid Russian porn sites as part of corporate policy, and our computers are kept up to date with Microsoft patches and Norton Antivirus. The reason for MSN is that MSN presents a clean interface that is easy for beginners to use, and even better for our tech support people because the users can not readily access critical settings (or in tech support speak ... the user can't screw things up).I personally downloaded IE7 and Firefox 2. (Being a corporate VP does have it's privilages.) What a waste of my time for both browsers. Tabbed browsing doesn't float my boat, and the user interfaces for both browsers appears dated and poorly designed. In the words of a staff artist peering over my shoulder both browsers appeared as if they were designed by a committee of stupid people. I visited all critical websites, those specifically designed for IE and those who have a firetruck Microsoft attitude. Neither IE or FF did anything specially better (or worse) than the other on the various websites, though downloading times for very slow down loading sites was several seconds faster with IE7 over both MSN and Firefox. On the technical side of things. IE7 was a bigger download than Firefox2, BUT, and this is a big BUT, but Firefox2 consumes more CPU memory than IE7. A LOT more. MSN Explorer is definetely a CPU hog, consuming nearly double the memory of IE6. IE7 is consumming less than standalone IE6 was consuming on my 'puter. And Firefox is approaching MSN consumption rates. Not good for a no frills browser like FireFox to suck down CPU capacity. And adding extensions (no matter how small) is just asking for more CPU cycles to be consumed. The negatives for Firefox are just too great, though IE7 is not setting my world on fire. For the time being we will stick with MSN. Though every computer has already been upgraded to IE7 so when we will be ready when we upgrade to Vista after the first of the year.

I'm a long-time Firefox user and only used Internet Explorer on sites that require it (my internet service provider, Comcast, apparently won't let anyone use any other browser to download software from their site (Macafee products are free and part of my cable internet service agreement) As soon as I heard about IE7 beta, I downloaded it to check it out on both Windows XP Pro SP2 and Vista RC1. As soon as I found out Firefox 2 release was on a university web site I downloaded it (about a day before official release). I'm not biased; I use what I prefer.I prefer using Firefox 2. I like the automated spell-checking because my fingers don't move as fast as I am thinking and I don't catch all my typos. That's a nice feature I like about Firefox 2. The close X on each is handy in both browsers. There are only a couple of sites I've been to besides Comcast.net that don't render correctly in Firefox. That said, I have run into a couple dozen sites now that don't render correctly in IE7, go figure. Not commercial sites but home-grown sites that are esoteric.I'm not rabid about anything. I use Windows XP. I will eventually get a computer with Vista on it. I won't upgrade the machine I have to Vista. I don't see the point. This is just the way I see things.

Firefox does not accept Stigs Sky Calendar, and since I like Amateur Astronomy...Firefox got UNINSTALLED!!! Also, I like fullscreen F-11, all frames disapear. Not so with tabs, and the tabs make a very SLOOOOOOOoooooooooooiowwwwww Firefox. Most of my pages work with Java, and Java takes Ages to download pages on Firefox. NO LIKE, man..no like at all!!! .donYan

I will pass on IE7 also. One of my clients downloaded IE7 and installed it. Suddenly she lost half of her medical words in her Stedman's dictionary, though they were still there if you searched for them in the dictionary. No matter what we did (update Office, update Stedman's, etc.) we could not get Word or WordPerfect to recognize the medical words in the dictionary. We uninstalled IE7 and PRESTO! the Stedman's dictionary worked correctly.Makes me wonder how many other programs are only half way working with IE7 and users do not realize it.Kelly

Sorry, a bit late ........As FF 1.5 was my default browser, I upgraded to FF 2.0, withoutany further ado. Just SOME of the hitches I met with :- neither the mouse scroller nor the touchpad up/down buttons work (see Mozilla Forum)- scanner : the "HP Director" icon is mute (see HP spokesmanRuss Twoey confirmation - Rob's 05/11/06 report)- slow connection to sites- AdAware and Spybot S&D daily finding data miners, trackingcookies, and 4 TROJANS, all due to 'Mozilla Firefox"- Not compatible with "CallingID"............................Switched default browser to IE 7.Besides its own toolbar, it accepts Google toolbar with all sort ofaddons, Wiki toolbar, Calling ID and CallingID Link Advisor, tags, and what not. One has all it's needed (and more) in a singlepage.May I add that having complained to Mozilla Italy Forum, I receivedthis reply : "The discussion has been canceled" ?Grateful for a comment to the comment.......oldboyGenoa,Italy

They dropped the great offline features (even though a page on the MS site commented on them as if they made the cut.)Waste of time to upgrade this one.

[quote name='computerman82']Internet explore 7, no thanks. I'm sticking with Mozilla Firefox 2. Internet explore 7 interface is not that good, and the security is very poor. Mozilla Firefox 2 is the best out there!!:?:What do you mean "security is very poor?" What have you seen to prove that statement? There has been no negative report on IE7 security yet, and no official statements yet, except from lame Microsoft bashers like you. Tell me how your "security" has been compromised by IE7. Well?EW

I upgraded to IE7 with the Beta version and haven't had any problems. I like the look and pages do load faster than firefox. I still prefer thunderbird over outlook though. Right now I am happy with the IE7 upgrade. Not A Problem. For those that can't find the file and edit buttons, press the Alt key. Hey there they are. I always have wanted to get rid of them. Plus the refresh button is next to the address bar, FF is just to slow for me, and all the extra add-ons...give me a break, I can spell check myself. why would I trust a browser to do that?????

If you have a great deal of Favorites with Folders/Subfolders they will be out of order,a mess, in the "Add to Favorites" drop down list in IE7 when upgrading from IE6 to IE7. Unlike IE6 there is no link when you right click on sort by name in the Favorites to the "Add to Favorites" list. To make a long story short I spent over 2 hours on the phone (1-866-234-6020) with the Microsoft IE7 support team to find a way to correct this flaw in IE7. Their conclusion, not mine, is that this is a design fault in IE7, I say this is major flaw in IE7 and reason alone not to use IE7 if you like to keep your "Add to Favorites" drop down list in alphabetical order. Finally, this not not even address additional problems, such as no way to collapse the subfolders in the "Add to Favorites" drop down list. Microsoft support suggests uninstalling IE7 and going back to IE6. Untill, these defects are corrected my advice is to avoid IE7 and use IE6 or FireFox2. Or maybe, try out URLBase 6 BookMark Manager, possibly the best bookmark manager in the world, at www.terriadev.com.What is maybe even more disturbing is Microsoft support acted like this was the first time they heard of these problems....despite 1000s of exact same complaints on the MS UseNet IE7 support site. Why has not the PC World review experts picked-up on these major flaws in IE? Could it be due to the fact it might discourage people from upgrading to Vista?

re: As in IE's implementation, each Firefox tab has its own closing button. However, Firefox provides no thumbnail previews of open tabs.Firefox has an extension (add-on now) called foXpose that tiles the open tabs

:evil:Okay Micro (Not so) soft sent IE7 as a manditory update, I removed it 3 times due to an issue I had. I love to use Musicmatch Jukebox. I also have Windows Media 10.... The problem IE7 blocked those programs from working, and also blocked me from the internet several times. Looking up my Yahoo mail was a feat that would bring a strong man to his knees. Each time I installed IE7. I got locked out, the third time, I got locked out of my PC, I had to start in safe mode just to delete this horrible program. If Microsoft is going to tell me, I can't use Musicmatch or Windows Media 10 anymore, I'll tell them what to kiss and where. If Vista does this, I would totally stop all my work on computers, because Microsoft doesn't listen when people inform them about a bug like this. Maybe because I'm not a Beta tester, I don't use nor trust Beta software. It's just asking for trouble. I think IE7 is still Beta, they forgot it's a screwed up old hag waiting to die a horrible death in the virtual world we know as computers. Hmmm,,, Perhaps the Great Microsoft doesn't really care.

Your comments:[quote name='sonicjosh']i hate ie, i use firefox and the extension "ietab" if i need it, ie is slow and ineffieciant, one of the biggest advanteges that firefox has is the abilty to mange and delete extensions and themes. plus the one other thing is you dont have to worry about windows genuniune advantage with firefoxmight appear less risible and more credible if you either had previously learned to spell correctly or made the effort to, at least, utilize a "spell check" program.

I wonder when MS will admit that IE7 is terribly flawed. It locks up most PCs (processor maxes - even new PCs) so as to make them useless. I backed it out and have asited many others in doing same. Has PC World had any articles on this? TBear99

Until IE7 features wood paneling like I have in Firefox, I wouldn't even consider using it regularly. I have IE7 installed, but only use it for Microsoft related matters or when a page will not render in Firefox. For someone who considers themselves an expert computer user, there is no contest. Leave IE7 to computer neophytes that don't appreciate all the features that are present in Firefox.
