I got one, try Firefox. I find most people with computer problems are suffering because of spyware or third party malware apps running under the radar. I first install Firefox and run it, they usually see the difference immediately. Then I'll scan for spyware and viruses, finally testing Firewall, but with Firefox first installed it will give you room to move.

Everyone needs to get firefox, or anything other then IE6 or earlier. MSconfig is also something everyone needs to learn, as far as the non-tech savy, all the startup programs are the number one thing screwing with their machine's speed as long as they have decent internet security.

Just got a new Alienware Area 51-7500 and have had nothing but problems. Could you tell me how this thin should be booting? #1 us the primary optical drive, ut I don't think #2 & #3 are right and boot CD doesn't work. I would call them (again) but am tier of them hanging up on me. Harrison L. Decker (Foxylady48180@aol.com)

Firefox always works. I like all of the addons! I had problems with the IE7 upgrade and uninstalled it. The best security for me is running my internet browser in a sandbox (Google for "Sandboxie" it is free to use but can be purchased if you like it.) Sandboxie can also be used with most other applications including as Windows Installer Service.

The article stated, "TouchStone Software's Driver Updates page at www.driveragent.com. The site, which requires Internet Explorer, scans your hard drive..." -- this is not correct. DriverAgent will work with Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, K-Meleon, Mozilla Seamonkey, and Netscape, to name a few.

I was surprised to see your comment that Windows 2000 does not have msconfig. Perhaps the non-Professional version doesn't, but I have an older computer with Windows 2000 Professional and it has msconfig, although in a slightly different location: c:windowsmsconfig. I find that I have to key the full path in the Run to use it, but it is available.

My wife and I share our desktop PC running Windows XP. At log-in it seems that since her name is before mine alpahabetically, Windows assigns more administrative rights. For instance when we upgraded from Windows 98 she got all of the favorites in IE, and I had none and could not import them to my USER ID until we switched to FireFox. Also she can use the Auto-run feature for CDs but I can not. What gives? Is there a work-around that will give us equal rights?

Dear Ed: Remember the piece done recently about"The 25 Things You (and staff) are sad to see go in today's tech environment ?" One thing I am more angered than sad about is,say a magazine seeking interaction in building its on-line audience; but like every site out there you just have to register and the sign-in over and overand over. This perpetual hassle you paid your design consultants how much for? Succinctly, you,ve been my home page for several years; and I subscribed foryears befor that.

Before I upgraded to XP2, my computer would boot up fine. After the update, I now get a nag screen asking for my signon password. I only have to click ok to get it to finish booting up. How do I rid myself of this nag, so that my machine boots up from the get go? Any help will be greattly appreciated.

For some time now, my HP Pavilion has been running very sluggishly, so this article caught my attention. I suspect a good part of my problem is programs running in the background that are hogging memory. Thing is, when I look at all of the autoloading programs (msconfig Start up tab), I have no idea what most of them are, or do. I would love to uncheck all of them, as Lincoln suggests, but I'm concerned that some of them may be required to successfully boot up. Can I be assured of a successful reboot if I uncheck all of them?

Regarding driveragent.com. I did the scan and it told them that "37%" of my drivers are outdated, including those for my monitor, video card, sound card, and USB. Quite a few of these are proprietary [Dell] drivers and I'm concerned about installing drivers without knowing the source, or that they will be compatible. I'd appreciate any comment on this issue.dg
