I have three accounts, running XP SP2.On only one of thise accounts, I cannot either log off or shutdown. XP cycles thru the "Saving your settings" screen quickly but then chokes on the black screen that should appear only momentarily before going to the screen showing all accounts [when just logging off] or the shutdown screen [when turning the machine off completely]. Only option is to hold the on/off button and turn off the machine.I googled and found references to User Profile Clean [a Microsoft fix], which I installed, but this had no effect.I'm suspecting that this account has become corrupted, but cannot figure out how to fix it. Any ideas?I'm thinking I may have to create a new account, then copy over the Docs and Settings plus Firefox bookmarks files, and delete the old account. Is this a safe assumption? If I have to do that, is there anything else I need to copy over to the new account?Machine and OS otherwise work fine. For the record, I regularly run AdAware SE PLus, Spybot, System Mechanic 7, and Spyware Blaster. AV and firewall are AVG 7.5 plus Firewall [the paid version].Thanks for any advice anyone can provide.Happy New Year.dg

If I could see the problem in front of me, I could solve it :D But I can't  so my solution is: I think you should create a new account and transfer all your documents and files from your old account to your new account. Your account has become corrupt in a way I cannot say. Do you have multiple accounts running while using your computer?Happy New Years.

I tried Microsoft's 'unload cleaner' (google 'User Profile Clean' to get it). It did something, but still had the prob later. But its doc got me thinking about software not unloading properly at logout time.Turns out this Compaq 5401 system came with a Compaq 1400p (ie: LexMark) printer. Their own included printer driver was the problem!! The client had mentioned they had trouble with the printer driver all the time. Had to constantly uninstall and reinstall to print.I uninstalled the printer driver and voila... no more logout problems! I tossed the included printer driver CD and downloaded new drivers from Compaq's website and all was well. She can print AND logout! Such a deal. ;-)So look for something like that. A driver for some pieces of new or external h/w you may have installed or was preinstalled with your system. Uninstall it and see if you can logoff. Then find better (newer) drivers!Hope this helps!
