Blu Ray single-sided, single layer: 25 GBBlu Ray single-sided, dual layer: 50 GBBlu Ray double-sided, single layer: 50 GBBlu Ray double-sided, dual layer: 100 GBhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_RayI think the advantage of Blu Ray over DVD and HD-DVD is obvious. If potential storage capacity is going to be the criteria, then Blu Ray still wins out: "And TDK announced in August that they have created a working experimental Blu-ray Disc capable of holding 200 GB of data on a single side, using six 33 GB data layers." Even though that capacity wouldn't be supported by current players, every technology goes through an upgrade process and there's no reason to expect Blu Ray to be any different.I've read a lot of forums where Sony is slagged because of their propensity for creating proprietary formats and Blu Ray is no exception in that regard. With some movie studios choosing to release movies in both Blu Ray and HD-DVD along with recently introduced players capable of playing both formats until a "standard" emerges, I am really hoping that Blu Ray ends up as the final choice. I don't even have an HD television yet, nor do I have a Playstation 3 (which comes with a Blu Ray player). My bias toward Blu Ray is based upon the technology itself and not the politics of who happened to invent it. Two ubiquitous formats inroduced by Sony: 3.5 inch floppie disks and their collaboration with Philips in developing the Compact Disc. Bottom line, every new format is proprietary at its birth. Long live Blu Ray!

After reading the comments i bought this unit, i found itr slow in reading and loading a disk, within the first month it started to go wrong, i contacted Samsung they told me to download new firmware from their web sit but it also said they do not accept any responsibity , so i took it to one of their service centres i was then told it would take three months to exchange, i contacted Samsung again i was then told it is the POLICY of SAMSUNG to exchange with a RECONDITIONED UNIT i then told them i did not pay over $1200 just to have a second hand unit. i now feel this will go to the small claims court DO NOT BUY THIS UNIT THE SERVICE IS BAD when it goes wrong

You couldn't have purchased the unit reviewed in this article (the Samsung BDP1200) because it hasn't even been released yet. The unit you purchased would have to be the Samsung BDP1000 which like almost every other HD disc player released to date has been shown to be slow loading. As for your troubles with the manufacturer, well...I agree. Getting a second-hand unit (refurbed, or not) to fix your new unit is NOT acceptable. Personally, I am not going to be buying any HD devices (television, player, etc.) until a "norm" has been reached. In other words, when the technology has become as common as DVD is now. By that time all the bugs should be worked out and these things function properly "out of the box" as they should without the need for firmware upgrades.
