I don't think the lack of participation in online filing is because of a lack of awareness. I think it is more a case of lack of confidence in the security for online filing. Didn't the IRS have an incident a few years back with e-filer data being lost or leaked?

If the error rate is 1% for electronic filling and 20% for paper filling, why doesn't the IRS make electronic filling free and charge for paper filling that takes more labor to process?I don't understand why I should have to pay for eFile PERIOD! I also think it sucks I have to pay for the damm tax program every year.

ActionAl: The IRS does not charge a fee for electronic filing. The fee is charged by the service providers. You do not have to go through the IRS web site to use the TurboTax free service, but you must go through www.taxfreedom.com.A number of states have their own web-based free file programs. You can use a service like TurboTax for the federal return, and then use the state's service for your state return. You have to enter your data twice, but that is not difficult for most returns.

rusman2, what do you mean by "reductions?" If you are referring to a reduction in the price for the tax preparation software, yes, there are several that offer free federal returns. There are two that also offer free state returns: Tax$imple and taxengine (only for some states). If by "reductions" you mean some service that will reduce your tax liability more than another, then the answer is no.

Since today the tax-man cometh and in my angst, I'm doing anything but taxes; while everyone is running around looking for tax packages and the fed "loss-leader' for the state 'PROFIT PACKAGE Mximizer;" and the reps and gimmicks like that VERY well known and VERY popular tax prep company that decided to pull a VERY UNPOPULAR validating/"call-home" scheme a fews back and is begging customers to come back...they didn't mean it, honest [a sidebar here, folks: I took a deep breath into the cold morning air, and as I was craddling my coffee, looking out into the distance, or vista, I could not be vaguely struck by another software manufacturer whose arrogant groupthink; let's just say The French Revolutionists would just love it wouldn't they? My point is, like the Feds (it takes forever to get there) is that we HAD FREE E_FILING FOR ABOUT FIVE OR MORE YEARS!!! The 1040PC! Your entire long form tax return and attachment eloquently laid out on one;YES, ONE SHEET OF 81/2"X11" PAPER !!

So, this company offers free tax e-file if you make under a certain amount. They then offer you to do your state for a fee of $12.88. I figured I might as well do them all together and paid. Well, my state application was listed as "duplicate" and I was instructed to call the IRS. Wrong number. The very nice IRS agent gave me the CA number to call and get cleared up. That agent told me that the site entered the information TWICE so the forms would not be accepted because they were duplicate. He said I had to fill out a whole new form and send it by mail. I did such, and found out that citizentax.com had not given me all the correct deductions that was on the simple ez form. I complained that their company error made me have to do my taxes myself and there system hadn't even processed my information correctly. There is no number to a real person to call, just a very hidden and hard to find area to write in. After several interactions, they not only won't refund me, but wrote "... we haven't been clear. The fact that you filed another return with a tax preparer is irrelevant. Your CA return has accepted through our e-file..."
This company did not listen to a WORD I wrote, so on four attempts I give up.
DO NOT USE THIS SERVICE!!!!
They file your taxes WRONG and offer NO help to fix them, just an IRS number. Their "customer service" department is for several websites that you have to sign up to even use and they are NO HELP!!!
I'm out 13 bucks and had a whole day lost on the phone to clear up the mess they made.
