Apple's iPhone SDK Strategy Both Promotes and Stifles Innovation
Headline alert: I read the article and didn't find anything that indicated how Apple's SDK/iApps store stifles innovation. On the contrary, I think everyone was pretty blown away by how open and reasonable things were--particularly that small developers and freeware developers are on comparable footing to large developers. That and licensing activeSync was a big surprise that should blunt criticisms that the iPhone is somehow limiting PC synchronization options. The one question I'm left with is how Apple is going to let corporate developers get their inhouse apps on the iPhone. Assuming they can answer that, I think they've got a great end-to-end solution that's a win for consumers and developers alike.

Re: Apple's iPhone SDK Strategy Both Promotes and Stifles Innovation

PC World says,"And that leaves an open question as to how well these apps will be able to tie into the PC universe".

Is this really the heart of the "stifles innovation"? Nothing in the article really indicates that Apple is stifling anything. Infact with the ease of developing software, ease of offering the software for sale, etc, Apple seems to be fully promoting new iPhone software.

So, maybe this is a PC user reacting to the fact that you will need a Mac to do the development and debugging of iPhone software. So what else is new. Recently I bought a wireless router. It works on Macs and PCs but you MUST HAVE A PC to activate it. It sucks. So what. LIve with it.

The iPhone works on .... well it works on itself. You can use either a PC or a Mac running iTunes to sync it. So, there is no hold back any way I can see.

Just a thought.
