Linux or Windows?

You use windows that you have to puying and all the extra software like Pro. antivirus,Pro. Firewall........

First time you build your own compute, you like to install windows XP or VISTA you need cd for your printer, graphics card, sound card.....

Linux(OpenSuse) is for free and (openSuse) about 20 Viruses that`s all and firewall free.

To use Linux one thing you make sure that hardware is compatible and you don`t need extra cd for printer...,because it recognize automatic.

You just follow the instruction.

Tnx everyone and special PCWORLD

Actually, there are plenty of printers that Linux won't recognize, and that CUPS won't set up for you. The printer is definitely among the many things you'll need to check (or buy) for compatibility.

Re: Linux or Windows?

Windows is more compatible for most every day applications used in the business world. Many don't run Linux because of it's lack of compatibility for PC games and other normaly used Windows applications. It all depends on what you plan to do.

I don't mind running security software for my Windows PC. I would do the same if I had Linux as my every day machine.

Ubuntu 7.10 works fine for me. Lit up most of the bits on my laptop, and I managed to track down drivers and work-arounds for the rest.

Hi IChseuche. I do not believe Service Pack 3 has been officially released as of yet.

Re: Linux or Windows?

I think it all comes down to "does it JUST work?". I have a wireless card that is a pain to setup with Linux... this would drive non-techncal users away from this OS.

Re: Linux or Windows?
Hi Vlad. That's the thing, Microsoft has not officially released it. Any version other than the official version released by Microsoft is either a leaked version or a beta version. According to Wikipedia, Microsoft has announced that it plans to release Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) to manufacturing on March 24, 2008. Granted, this date can always change. If Microsoft official released SP3, it would be available as either a stand-alone download or an automatic update.

Vlad - Earlier when beta versions of both vista sp1 and xp sp3 were released, it was said that both will come as rtm together. Vista sp1 is out but xp sp3 still isnt.

24 march may be the date when the source code is released to manufacturing if it is not delayed. Thats what the link you posted says. Same date for vista sp1 was feb 4 ( if i remember correctly ) and it came on msft download center on 18 march. So even if the date 24 march remains in its place, the service pack 3 will be available for download some more time after that if it follows vista lines. But i am not sure whether xp sp3 integrated CDs will retail or not, coz if they wont , then this 24 march date cud be the final one. Wait n watch for now.

Re: Linux or Windows?
Hi Piyush and thanks for that information. This is a perfect reason why I just wait for the final release of any application. I don't need to be someone's guinea pig, you know?

Re: Linux or Windows?
Well, I am currently running Linux Ubuntu 7.10 on a Dell 530n (BTW not the Dell installed version but the vanilla Ubuntu 7.10) and it runs fine. I use a Canon printer (I-860) hooked up to my Xp machine as the server. I have not had any problems printing to it although I have heard all kinds of horror stories about Canon not being supportive of Linux. My understanding is that HP does provide drivers for Linux so this seems to cover about 75% of all common printers out there. So I don't see a problem with printing for someone contemplating a switch to Linux. I have heard of some stories with wireless cards so I cannot comment on them. My setup is a direct Ethernet cable to my wireless router (Linksys) so I cannot complain there.

As to Windows Vista and XP, of those two, I much prefer XP. I have Vista running on two computers in my household (HP Pavillions) and am not that impressed with either its speed or utility. Trying to install some software, if though you are in the administers group is ridiculously complicated--what were the MS people thinking!

As to utility, I have found very good substitutes on my Linux system for Windows programs. Since I am not a gamer or really much care about gaming, this is not a problem for me. But as to surfing the Internet or email, I find Linux to be about twice as fast as the Windows downloads--this may be because I do not run anti-virus or firewall software. Obviously, this may change in the future as hackers write virus code for Linux, but until now, I don't see the need.
