Re: Vista SP1: Threat or Menace?
Yes, having a spare HD is a little comforting, but not nearly as comforting as have that spare HD be an up to date clone of the HD in the machine. Then when that dreadful day comes, all you have to do to recover is swap drives. I thing having a PC without a spare drive around is like driving a car with no spare tire. Murphy says that the failure will come and will happen at the most inopportune time.

BTW - on the your other post. Yes I like my garbage - so much I have three of it, with one to install yet.

Vista SP1: Threat or Menace?
The IT manager where I work is waiting for one of the major companies in our area (whom he used to work for) to report positive results from the migration to the Vista platform. Until then our company will stay with XP Pro platform for all work stations (except two or three Vista test systems).

I do however have a home system running Vista Business (32 bit) on hardware that was close to the leading (bleeding?) edge in the end of 2006. I successfully applied the stand-alone Vista SP1 to this system twice (once with all software programs in place - this was to test the stand-alone version installation - and then a second time with just the Vista OS and hardware drivers in place prior to installing SP1).

All performance increases are small but welcome. I do notice better rendering speed of the icons in the explorer shell which is nice.

I would say this makes Vista perform the way I would have expected it to peform on original release. Not great but acceptable.

Vista SP1: Threat or Menace?
You people who won't leave XP (support will terminate mid-year this year) only hurt yourself. I upgraded to Vista Ultimate the first day it was available, and SP1 has now been automatically applied overnight a few days ago.

There is nothing wrong wih Vista, and there is much much that is great about it. I run my business on-line and love the support that I get from Microsoft.

Vista SP1: Threat or Menace?
On a fresh install of Vista, plus all the updates, it was taking my HP Pavilion DV6000 series laptop about four minutes to reach my desktop. I'm assuming it was a hardware or driver issue, but now with SP1 installed, it takes only one minute to completely boot.
SP1 has finally made me very happy with Vista, though I know my problem was special.

Note to XP users: don't forget that before SP2 came out, XP was worse than Vista is now.
Just this week I did a clean install of XP with no service packs installed, and I was shocked at how slow and unstable the system was, but once I put in SP2, the improvement was enormous.
I had forgotten how bad it used to be.

I can't wait for SP2 for Vista.

Re: Vista SP1: Threat or Menace?
If you have 'automatic updates' enabled so it will patch without your explicit approval, then it's a 'Menace'.

If you don't, then it's just a threat, like any other passive dangers, because you have to install it for it to do additional damage above and beyond having Vista as the OS.

So, how many folks do you think will start chanting "It'll be so much better with SP2!"?

If they keep up the service packs, that'll be autumn 2009 before your computer works 'perfectly'..

Why is this forum editor behaving like a drinking game? First I had to always click 'Plain Text' because the 'Rich Text' editor is bent, now I have to insert html 'break' entities into the text to keep it from becoming one huge run-on paragraph.

Vista SP1: Threat or Menace?
Hey, thank you all for your Recommends and especially your comments. This is a brand-new blog and I want to make of it what's most useful/interesting/fun to all of you, so I really appreciate the feedback.

My own experience w/Vista has been so-so. It really bombed my system once -- lucky I had Linux on another partition. But when I tried to roll back to XP I couldn't find a disc that would install on my system without a bunch of extra drivers. Looks like I'm stuck w/Vista. So far the Service Pack hasn't caused me the slightest trouble. But has it really helped me any? That remains to be seen.

istanbul and Tech4me, stick around. You're inexperienced, but you're curious. You remind me of myself when I was -- well -- probably half your age! ;-) You're the type of people who got me into the business of writing about tech to begin with.

Re: Vista SP1: Threat or Menace?
I agree. I think Tech4me has demonstrated that he intends to stick around for a while at least. The first 100+ posts are under his belt. Istanbu do hang around, sometimes we wander down memory lane and it will give you some background for today's systems. It is always good to have someone as a question, Vladtheimpaler1990's teacher gave him a research question, and it really stumped some of the more experienced members. We all learned from that question.

Sometimes also, those who have been around a while assume that because we know something, everyone does. A quick question of what something means or does, brings us back to explain and then the entire community benefits. Remember, the only stupid question is the one that didn't get asked because a member didn't feel it was important.

Vista SP1: Threat or Menace?
I bought a new Acer with Vista on it. There's hasn't been any trouble since I turned the machine on. Vista, even with the new SP1 is still a little slow and a memory hog but all in all it does what it's supposed to do. Maybe the solution to some of the problems is to get more memory for your machines. Mine came with 2 GB. I believe 1 GB is not enough. There seems to be a general comment among my software friends that if you want Vista, the best solution is to get a new system with Vista already installed. That way there won't be any hardware conflicts. After all these years we should know better than to expect Operating Systems to "get it right the first time". Given all the different computer systems and all the different peripherals out there it's going to take at least three years for the Vista system to satisfy everyone. As computer systems and peripherals get more complicated Operating systems will have to follow suit.

Since I had Vista on my laptop and had upgrade to Ultimate, I had read about sp-1. I wonder ,due to the negative thing I had read , would i be worth the trouble.... I went ahead and installed . so far not a hitch or hint of problems Although it still hasn't solve my "ClCapSvc Module" issuse. It has sped thing up. y laptop boots' faster and every thing seem to wor faster than before. this is a laptop with 2GB an intelcore 2 Duo at 1.6ghtz with intel intergrated graphics... Vista SP1: Threat or Menace?
Marco, using Vista is a great idea. Get used to it. OS's come and go. People loved Dos 6.0, ouch. I have XP, Vista and Linux (Ubuntu). I have been using unix for a long time so Ubuntu was a good choice for me. XP is a good system but next to Vista seems like a small rock next to a big boulder. They all have their uses. Since you have a laptop and integrated graphics the games you play will seem slow on Vista. That's ok. Even though there will be very limited support for XP I would use it until the pc falls apart.

Vista SP1: Threat or Menace?
I am a fairly new user of vista supplied with laptop at purchase and have been reading all your comments/experiences with SP1.
My vista is still on its own without SP1, i do have slight glitches for ex; slow page loading(all those damn pics),and slow at finding/receiving sites like my mailbox. However, the OS used to run even slower when i first got it, my trial and error using my past experiences with the likes of win98 2000 have helped me to understand what goes on within vista and speed it up somewhat. But i feel that for someone with no pc experience this would have been a nightmare/or a costly time.
I have heard there are two waves of SP1, The difference being the language packs supplied with each wave. Could someone enlighten me to this as to which one i should install.
