Re: Vista SP1: Threat or Menace?

Hi Tech4me, am back again after a succesfull install, everything seems to be ok, a bit quicker on loading pages, will have to do a proper run through tomorrow.

It took just over the hour for the download and then 45mins approx for the install and about 20 mins for the 3 update stages.

AM NOW A HAPPY CHAPPY AGAIN, looks like i have a lot more to learn from vista so let's rock and do it......................................

Re: Vista SP1: Threat or Menace?

I'll have to remember that. And as long as you're learning than your time is well spent. I'm partially retired and just consulting somewhat on a limited basis. I don't think I'll be doing it for much longer. My thoughts are that if I can get some exercise in and spend some time on the machines than I'll be much happier. I have to say again that Vista is neither a threat (to whom) nor a menace. I think those words were wrongly chosen. How can an OS be a threat. And furthermore what is it menacing. Actually I'm using XP right now because my wife is on the Vista machine. She took to it immediately. If it's tweaked right and it's on a new machine than there shouldn't be any problem. Sounds like your machine is a dream machine. It has everything.

Re: Vista SP1: Threat or Menace?

I'm sure that SP1 has been updated on my Vista Ultimate machine, which I never turn off. But I am unable to find anything on my system which says that in no uncertain terms.

Does anyone know how to find out if it is installed or not?

Re: Vista SP1: Threat or Menace?
Two ways...First, you can click into WIndows Update from the Start Menu, from there you will see a link to the left of the window that says "View Update History". Second, you can right click Computer, and go to Properties. From there, your Sysytem Properties window will open up. In that window, there is a field call "Windows Edition" at the top, and there it will either say Service Pack 1 if you have it. Vista, like any OS, is a work in progress. I think OS has great potential to be a very good OS. I will recommend this over XP at this point in the game.

Re: Vista SP1: Threat or Menace?
There should be a welcome Center that boots up unless you unclicked it. It's like the control panel. It gives you your system info and lots more. Go to start menu. Click on programs. You should see the Welcome Center in the menu. If the specs do not say SP1 than you have to download it from Microsoft. My new Acer did not have SP1 downloaded. I had to manually download it. It takes about an hour or less.

Re: Vista SP1: Threat or Menace?

Hi tech4me, have just finished work and am about to test my machine on various tasks to see what differences installing SP1have made.

I have noticed a few people (including a couple of my friends) have not had SP1 pushed to their machines by microsoft, is their a reason for this.

this applies to premium and ultimate machines.

Re: Vista SP1: Threat or Menace?

Hi rottitera . I have Home Premium and I manually down loaded from MS,( Through Wds update.)

Ask your friends to run WDs update,, to see if Its there.Did they have Auto Update ON..?

BTW..Ask them to turn off Any Security to speed up...After It resets the security will come back on automatically.

It did not load Automatically for me......I was too fast..?

Re: Vista SP1: Threat or Menace?

Hi Tech4me, thanks for your info, When you say "turn off the security" are you referring to windows security, i.e firewall ?

Do you have any clues as to why some p.c's did not have SP1pushed to them by microsoft other than the manual switching off of the auto update, i set my laptop not to install auto but it was still sat there (SP1) waiting for me to hit the install button..

Re: Vista SP1: Threat or Menace?

rottitera . Beside Wd defense that comes with Vista..If you have any other security programs then you can temporary turn them off to speed up downloading.

When you go to WD update :You have 4 choices: In your case ,you selected Download but not install(So you can install it yourseft)

Your friends might select NEVER CHECK FOR DOWNLOAD. Other than that I don't have any glue to go by..(Sorri..) Have fun.

Re: Vista SP1: Threat or Menace?

Fairly new to these forums, but not to computers.

To rottitera,

If your friends machines are set to download the updates automatically, then one possibility is that Windows Update is seeing a problematic driver (or language pack) and is not offering the service pack. Another possibility is that one of the prerequisite updates has not been installed yet and needs to be installed before the service pack is offered.

The main update needed is 'KB937287' which allows SP1 to be uninstalled. Note - there have been some issues on a small number (according to MS) of machines where a continual reboot occurs during 'Stage 3' of this update. Microsoft had pulled the update at one point.

Microsoft has indicated that they expect to have the issues with drivers and all language packs in SP1 available sometime in April, so some folks will have to wait.

Note - the stand alone SP1 installer (downloadable from MS download center) has all the prerequisite updates included and will install those prior to installing the full service pack (although I am not sure whether it will give an error message if driver issues or language pack issues are present).

Re: Vista SP1: Threat or Menace?

Very good info, Tech4me. That confirms a suspicion I had. My update flag in my tray stays on - I have download set to notifiy me but not download. Sometimes SP1 shows up, and sometimes it's some other update. I keep dodging SP1, not because I don't want it, but I don't have the bandwidth with Hughesnet to download it. I downloaded the file from a friends 1.5Meg DSL last tuesday, and later today when I have the systems ready and the clones updated, I will install it.

For example last night the SP1 notification was there, this morning it was gone, but a definition update for Defender was there. After downloading the small update, the SP1 notification is back again.

Re: Vista SP1: Threat or Menace?
Hi Tech4me, Thanks for the invaluable link, i found this info very helpful indeed.

This backs up the Driver issue theory that many of us have been wary about regarding installation of SP1. To me the term "compatibility" has a very wide span to it with regards to Vista, but of course if you were to just take microsofts word for it without forums like this one with a good bunch of helpful guys, then you would

certainly be "lost in the woods".

I posted this message at 19:30, if you look at the time displayed within my message it says a different time, i've only just noticed this, any ideas ????
