Hi Piyush. Yeah, one of my friends actually received noticed that Microsoft released the Service Pack and then pulled it back. Do we expect anything less? :D

Re: Microsoft Delays Release of Windows XP SP3

hi mph

A leaked version of sp3 rtm exists over this link : http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/software/svpk/2008/04/windowsxp-kb936929-sp3-x86-enu_c81472f7eeea2eca421e116cd4c03e2300ebfde4.exe

The link looks like the msft update servers but the file is about 315 mb while those getting from msdn via subscription is approx 500mb. So i guess its better to wait for now till its available on the download center.

But i m still not getting the validity of above link .

Re: Microsoft Delays Release of Windows XP SP3
No. From what I heard, and this is coming second hand, Microsoft actually released the true SP3, not a Beta version, and then pulled it back because of the issues laid out within this article. Anyone who had already downloaded and installed SP3 were advised to perform a System Restore to remove the Service Pack. Again, I am getting this second hand so I have no way to confirm this.

I figured something like this was going to happen anyway. Give them a couple of weeks and it will be released again.

Re: Microsoft Delays Release of Windows XP SP3

Hey Everyone!!

As you might recall, I was in search of the SP3 to install,(sorry MPH for interrupting the SP1 discussion) when it finally hit me . My XP OS is in FRENCH , which means that ANY "exe.enu" ( meaning en= english and the u= US) will not install on my PC . It has to be "exe.fr." well, you get it , right?

So I have since been on the other side of the Atlantic to try and find the infamous XP SP3 in French but to no avail.

When I came back to North America, I paid a visit to askwoody . This is where I found the info. that I needed to ascertain the fact that Microsoft had problems with the SP.

Now it seems that, I will not be able to up-date to the new SP because of this fact. Since I cannot find one in French means that I will

have to wait until it becomes available again.

You should check out AskWoody for all of the info. and some other news about this mishap.

You can still download the SP3 from his site ( direct download ) but, as he says , this could be only a matter of time before

MS pulls the download page.

Woody explains:

WinXP SP3 isn't yet available via Windows Update (although you can download it directly).
Microsoft won't make XP SP3 available via Windows Update or Automatic
Updates until it has an installer in place that refuses to install SP3
on machines running Dynamics RMS.

I didn't read the article yet but, this also involves Vista's SP1.

Since the SP1 is already out MS will not pull it from Auto-Update.

Woody also explained :

Vista SP1 is already available via Windows Update and Automatic
Updates. Microsoft won't pull SP1 because of this problem, but will
change the Windows Update logic so Vista SP1 isn't offered to computers
running Dynamics RMS. (UPDATE: Microsoft HAS pulled Vista SP1 from
Windows Update and Automatic Update, apparently pending a fix for the
installer.)

So, as you can see , MS has managed to bungle yet another one.

How typical. I was all fired up and ready to install, all to have my enthusiasum dashed once again

Re: Microsoft Delays Release of Windows XP SP3
Hi Flashorn. Not a problem at all. The article references both Vista SP1 and XP SP3 so there is no interruption at all. From your post, here is what I find most interesting:

"Microsoft won't make XP SP3 available via Windows Update or Automatic Updates until it has an installer in place that refuses to install SP3 on machines running Dynamics RMS."

Personally, anything that is not directly provided by Microsoft and references anything similar to RTM, RC, Beta, etc. is not worth the headache. Anything short of the true and final release of anything is just setting oneself up for grieve if and when that Beta application shows its bugs. Like you, I was ready to do the installation, but one if it was presented to me directly from Microsoft as an Update. I wanted for a few weeks until SP1 was released on the Vista side of my computer. I see no need to get itchy fingers and download/install something that may not be exactly what it claims.

I do not foresee this as being a major setback and I am almost positive SP3 will be releases, as an Update by Microsoft, within the next couple of weeks.

Re: Microsoft Delays Release of Windows XP SP3
Hey MPH!!

The link that Woody posted and that I re-posted here about SP3, is in fact, the real SP3.

If you are running Home and are not running Dynamics RMS, then there should be no problem with this

version of SP3.

The only problem with this SP is the installer for Dynamics.

I have read some time ago on AskWoody that the last RC was about 500 megs. but, that the final SP3 was to be at around 350 megs.

If you click on the link so kindly provided by Woody , you would see that the size is in fact 316 megs.

I have once again tried, this afternoon, to get more info. on TechNet , where I am a member, and could not find what I even found on the Weekend.

They did not waste any time in pulling everything off the shelves.

The only info. that was still available was on the French sites I was on last Sunday

They still have the release schedule marked as of 29/4/08.

If you would like to practice your French , here is where you still can find some info.

silicon.fr .

Now, had I found the French version of SP3 , It would now reside on my desktop

and would probably be posting on how to fix everything that was going wrong with it. LOL!

Re: Microsoft Delays Release of Windows XP SP3
:D Well, I downloaded the file, and sure enough, 316MBs. The exact file name is windowsxp-kb936929-sp3-x86-enu_c81472f7eeea2eca421e116cd4c03e2300ebfde4. Like you, I am going to sit on this for a while; at least until Microsoft gives the official go ahead.

Re: Microsoft Delays Release of Windows XP SP3
hey flash
are u a technet member or a subscriber ?? There is a difference between that.

If anyone is planning to use that 316 mb file at this time , i will be the first one to say NO. Though mph has downloaded the file already, i m pretty sure he wont be double clicking it.

Here is what msft has to say about such files -

Customers should not download Microsoft software from links posted on non-Microsoft websites, when those links point directly to the executable Customers should always download from a page on Microsoft.com that provides all relevant download details, installation instructions, and release notes. It is possible that some 3rd party websites are linking to the Windows XP SP3 software that we have published for MSDN and TechNet subscribers. Since we cannot confirm the source of every link that 3rd parties provide, out recommendation is that customers wait until we’ve published Windows XP SP3 to Windows Update and the Download Center.

Moreover i had enough troubles with the xp sp3 beta. I had to reinstall the OS last week to get that thing out. I had installed it about 2 months earlier , installation was quiet but on uninstalling it was all messed up . After uninstall , half of the windows functions wouldnt work properly , i restored back and then there were two add-remove programs in the control panel. Ya , that is correct , 2 add remove. I was myself rofl at this. Finally i had to reinstall and its at present unpatched , as i m not installing the updates again, will just do the sp3 update when it comes. No more playing with the beta stuff .

Hi Piyush and good find on this. This is exactly why I refrain from any non-Microsoft downloads and shy away from third party sites. They may mean well, but in the long run, always go to the source.

Re: Microsoft Delays Release of Windows XP SP3

Hey Piyush!!

If there is one place or site that I truly trust, it is AskWoody .

He has Always steered me in the right direction on no matter what issue I was asking information about.

Woody would never suggest making any irrational installation of Any of the MS up-dates or software for that matter

but, posts the information on his site in case someone (like you) would like to test the Betas or RCs.

He once told me in a reply that , it is better to post the right info. on his site

than to have you go looking and downloading off of a unknown site.

Woody with his line of "For Dummies" books , got me started a very long time ago.

I still buy his books on occasion. The explanations are down to earth and easy to understand.

not to mention the pics. that are so important when you just can't quite grasp the explanation.

Piyush , take a look at the explanation from Woody:

Just one little problem. Dynamics RMS doesn't play well with either
Vista SP1 or XP SP3. It's so bad that Microsoft is delaying deployment
of XP Service Pack 3 via Windows Update until they can fix the
installer so XP SP3 won't be installed on Dynamics RMS systems.

As you can see from his comment , It's not that SP3 doesn't work for home users , it's that

people using that software in particular will have trouble with SP3.

The rest of us are in no danger.

The link he posted came directly from TechNet, so it was the right one.

I won't be installing it either because of the fact that my OS is French

and that I can't find a SP3 to install, other wise I would.

After all, you have the experience with the beta so I'm safe Right?

And to have two Add/Remove programs, well, no more problems removing software from my PC.

How else are we to learn if not by trial and error.

This is why I like to install new programs and evaluate. I certainly do my research before hand

but, it is so interesting to see what the software is all about.

AND if I do run into problems, you guys and gals are always there to help out.

Like you once mentioned , Piyush , interactive learning is the best.

Microsoft Delays Release of Windows XP SP3
Hum....you guys failed to report the WHOLE NEWS! SP3 was RELEASED to some channels. Unless you run Dynamics there is no reason to not install the update.

The URL listed above is NOT a leak. That's the actual update from MS. You'll notice MS has done "nothing" to remove the download? That's because they don't care if it's downloaded because it was already RELEASED. They just can't have the wrong machines downloading it from windows update.

MSDN and OEMs have had SP3 since the beinging of April.
