Re: share a printer on a wired network
Technically, No. Practically, Yes. I know this is confusing, but if you attach the printer to the Vista computer and want to share the printer with the XP computer, then the XP (and Win2000 as well) computer must be password protected to see the printer on the Vista computer. The reverse is not true, if the XP computer is not password protected, then the Vista computer can see the printer just fine.
If your XP computer already has password protection, then it can see the printer attached to the Vista computer just fine.
The first step is to share the printer on the host computer. This is done from within the printer folder by clicking on the printer icon and then selecting sharing from the pull down menu. You will then be prompted to give the printer a share name, and I would use a descriptive name such as brand+model, not steve's or den printer. You many move or change the printer and then the name would not match the location.
Then go onto the guest computer and install the printer. When you are asked if it is a local (connected to the current PC) or network or shared printer, choose networked or shared. The OS will then go out and search for all shared or networked printers and just follow the screens from there.
