Suggestions on computer for gaming and net surfing.

Hi there.

I'm considering purchasing a new computer within the next few months. I have a 5 year old HP Pavilion with added memory but it can just barely handle Sim City and none of the newer games. I'm not a hardcore online gamer, but I would like to be able to play the new and newest games without too much trouble. I really like the graphics so I would like to be able to have the graphics on the games set to full.

Someone suggested I just add an additional D drive and update the video card and that's all I need. I have a feeling they may be wrong. What are you thoughts on that?

Also, I was considering the Dell XPS410 although it seems you folks are not too keen on Dell. I don't really want to order one built because I don't know enough about computers to know what to request, also I would perfer going with a larger company such as HP or Dell. My budget with monitor is right around 1300.00

Thanks!

new computer
Nothing wrong with dell or hp. I find its usually the user not the system that sucks.

The Dell XPS410 is a solid choice. At the dell site I built the 998.00 version into 1380.00
by adding memory and a better vid card.

Web browsing really requires little from a computer but a high speed connection so I'd only worry about the gaming aspect.

Hp and dell both allow you to build a computer so build the best one for 1300.00 that meets your needs.

The HP a1650 might fit your needs, starting at under 600 bucks.

Thanks for your responses!

These will both do well if I add some mem and a good video card with the newer and upcoming games?

I always see this people buy computers to play games. I never recomend this cause every six months you have to upgrade or replace your computer to keep up with the newest games . do your self a favor buy a xbox or playstation what ever system you like. and just get a decent pc for your other stuff you will save tons of money and time.. I am sure I will have arguements on this but thats just my opinion and what I have experienced.. the gaming systems now days offer HD graphix and run games way better than pc's do..

ether way good luck

I'm not sure that you'll be able to play games at the highest settings as you are on a budget and aren't building it yourself, but they may still run depending on how high you want to try to run things. The idea of getting a console isn't necessarily a bad one if you want the eye candy up the wazoo. Lastly, don't forget to be mindful of possible other upgrades as some of the newer video cards can have big power requirements, e.g. a standard HP system may not be prepared to handle a Quad SLI with a couple 7950 GX2s as it may kill some power supplies.

Regards,
JB

If I could hook up an Xbox to my PC monitor, that would be great!

Just take your time and do more research into whats available, and get the best Video card you can afford, along with the most memory you can afford, and get ready to upgrade every couple of years.

not to hard really
choose your company, dell hp compaq blah blah blah
i suggest dell's xps 410, offering the lattest from intel, the core2duo, runs games well, but then again, once games go multithreaded, it will be even better.
with this computer, id say spend the extra money, go for the 2 gig of memory 667 mhz.
upgrade the video card to the 7900 gs, and your good to go =)
in a year or 2, u may want to upgrade the video card, in order to keep with kurrent titles =)
