routers are pretty simple to use actually, with anything there can be virus's made for them but Ive never found any on mine. You can easily reset them as well, besides if you have a laptop (with a wireless card) you'll be happy you got it. Seriously there a breeze to use.
IF you want both computers connected and I know thats not what you were looking for, you can hook them up via ethernet port to each other and share a connection (I had to do that when my router was upstairs and I only had 1 wireless adapter)
Anyway, with your problem it happens sometimes. What my cable company always says is, unplug 5 secs replug back in.. blah blah... reset... try reparing in your properties in network settings I guess. Its odd that your connected but it won't work, my votes still on the router. It may still not work but its something to try, and when you do get it to work it will be better then switching it out.
Do you have msn, sometimes the new one when it logs on tries to troubleshoot why it cannot connect to the internet, mabey it could help you track down the source... the resinstillation of the drivers is an excellent idea too guru.
edit___ scratch the computer to computer connection less you have an extra ethernet port, its early and I wasn't thinking. Eitherways, its unstable and slower then a router anyway.

cool, whatever suits you, but seriously using a router is generally a lot easier then the stuff you already know how to do (ping, renew ip etc)
I think youd be much happier, seriously you just plug it in, even if you have both hardwired I think you'd be happy.
