Unable to Start Windows After Shutting Down During Windows Restore Process

I have an old Compaq Pressario 5000 that I purchased new some years back, solely for home use! Because I'm now stuck in the house most of the time I had it upgraded two years ago, giving me way more than enough storage for downloading games, than I'll probably ever need! It was much cheaper than purchasing a new computer. One night I dozed off and woke up with my face in the keyboard, shut off the computer and went to bed! My problem is that when I shut it down, it was during a Windows Restore operation, and now I can't get back into Windows. I tried the Windows recovery disc, but still no luck! I don't have a Windows installation disc either! When I star up the computer, I'm told to press F8, then given a couple of options(restart in safe mode, DOS, etc), but no matter which option I choose, the computer shuts down then starts up again, giving me the same set of instructions. I'm an admitted "dummy" when it comes to the technical aspect of computers and am wondering if there is a specific key I should be pressing that will put me back to where I initially shut down? Since a new computer is out of the question and this one was my link to the outside world, is it even salvageable? Thank You!

Hi, Nrthnbkr.

Here are some articles you might want to read: [Six
Downloadable Boot Discs That Could Save Your PC|http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,145395-page,1/article.html], Diagnose and Repair an Unbootable XP or Vista PC and What to Do When XP or 2000 Won't Boot. Let us know if they help.

Also, it would help if you could tell us what version of Windows is on the PC.

Re: Unable to Start Windows After Shutting Down During Windows Restore Process
Hi Nrthnbkr, When you aid you shut down in the middle of a Windows restore operation, I am assuming you did a hard shut down ( pressed the button the computer). First, that operation should have been allowed to complete before shutting down the computer. The problem with some recovery disks is, if you've made any hardware changes ( changed the original configuration), they won't work. That having been said, you can generally change out the processor and add memory with no effect. Those recovery disks usually give you several options, 1) reset to last known good configuration 2) non destructive reinstallation ( this will reinstall your OS with out interfering with other installed programs) and 3) Destructive reinstallation ( this will reformat your Hard drive and reinstall the OS, drivers, and the bloatware back to Factory settings as it was out of the box. You will lose all your programs that you installed unless you have previously backed them up). You said that you have at least upgraded the Hard Drive. That may have a bearing on whether or not the recovery disk will work. You might also want to consider buying a Windows intallation disk for your OS. These can be found at newegg.com or TigerDirect.com to name two. coastie65
