Microsoft Cuts off Hotmail Access via Outlook Express
Hey Eric!!
I have been using Windows Live since the onset of the service and cannot complain about the service provided by this client. It's always on my deskstop as a shortcut. Simply click on the icon and I'm in. It minimizes to the notification area and is there when needed. Plus, as you mentioned , lots of free online space. Access to different LIve options and a bevy of interactive services.

I guess this will make up for Vista/

It's an interesting commentary on how long Microsoft's user base will put up with using garbage. No wonder Windows is still selling.

I'm sure people will decry this move and demand continuing support for their precious Outlook Express malware installation suite.

Outlook Express is pretty antiquated by most standards (code wise and security wise). I've been using Thunderbird for most of my email needs. Are there any other applications that are recommended?

I just use the gmail web interface for the last several years. Work fine, last real long time. Gobs of space. Mail search is REAL quick.

Good thing my parents don't use Hotmail. I can't get them to use anything else but Outlook Express. I use Gmail so it's not a big deal for my, but my parents are going to have an aneurysm when M$ shouts OE down.

What a bunch of garbage. I have used all emails programs from outlook ,outlook express, gmail, thnderbird, hotmail, and live. regardeless of security, live has been the bigest headache, I've had to use. For the pass two weeks, I have been trying to contact microsoft support, using live, and all my mail has been returned by their own sever! It's gotten to the point that when Microsoft has something that works and has been a solid performer the either make it obsure or phase it out all together. well maybabe it time to jon the apple badwagon or linux, but I just about reached my end with microsoft..... B. Gates get your company inder control or continue to face the outrageous lawsuits... we're tried of being B.S. about our OS's Mail client and eaverything else that your firm dishes out under the premise of better computing for the future....

I'm not a Hotmail user, but could be because I do have a Microsoft Passport. I use OE to access web-based e-mail to save to my hard disk so I do not have to physically log onto several accounts. Although speed is not an issue with me, it seems that Microsoft is trying to improve overall user experience. The author indicated that his experience "upgrading" was uneventful. Cannot remember if OE was included with IE7, but if it wasn't, that should be a clue that its days are numbered.

Typical of the arrogance of Microsoft to cut off account access without consultation.

I recently upgraded my daughter's PC to LiveMail from OE as she is adamant about changing her very long standing Hotmail account. Whilst the transition was easy - she is totally phased by the WindowsMAil interface - - OE was so much simpler!

I'm trying to pursuade her to move to Gmail so that she can still use OE.

Hey David!!

You might want to re-instate your Daughter's OE because, MS just announced that it will not cut service

as of June 30th

This is what Woody of AskWoody.com .

had to say:

Microsoft suddenly gets the OE Hotmail religion\

Windows News

Three weeks ago, Microsoft announced that it was pulling the plug on the Outlook Express/Hotmail connection. Those of you who use Outlook Express (or its Vista version, called Windows Mail) to access your Hotmail accounts could look forward to being cut off after June 30.

Quite a few people hit the roof over that one, including some big corporate customers. I mean, if you spent a gazillion bucks on upgrading your company to Vista, only to discover that your fancy new Vista-based email program was getting shut off from its Microsoft Hotmail access, you wouldn't be too happy either, would you?

Quoth the official Windows Live Hotmail blog in a wonderful example of marketing pablum:

Recently, many customers received notification regarding Microsoft's plan to disable the DAV protocol, which allows you to access your Windows Live Hotmail inbox from Outlook Express. From the feedback we received, it became clear that you needed additional time to evaluate alternative solutions and with this in mind, we are postponing the transition deadline previously announced. This means that you will continue to be able to access your Windows Live Hotmail accounts from Outlook Express beyond the June 30 transition deadline.

+ As Microsoft continues to evolve its products to meet your needs, we appreciate your feedback. This change to Outlook Express protocol is one such evolution and will allow for managing of multiple accounts and todayâ€^TM^s large inboxes. We will update you on expected future changes and alternatives with enough advance notice to ensure a smooth transition.+

+ We apologize for the inconvenience this change may cause.+

Outlook Express and its stunted half-sister Windows Mail are both orphaned, buggy time sinks. If you use them, you should seriously consider switching to a real email program like Gmail or even, yes, Hotmail, in the near term

So, if you would like to earn "Brownie Points" , you could tell your daughter that she can still use her OE

but, at the same time try and convince her to change over to another E-Mail client,

Thank you very much for that, Flashorn

Now all I have to do is book another flight to Portugal to sort it out - still the weather is nice there.

What email client would you recommend - Thunderbird?

Hey Ofsted!!

Well, to tell you the truth, I have never used Outlook or Outlook Express simply

because they "download" all of your e-mails on to your Hard Drive which

makes it easier to get infected through attachments in e-mails.

What I use instead are , Web Based e-mail clients such as :

Windows Live Mail : Windows Live Mail

Yahoo mail : YahooMail.ca

Gmail.com : Gmail .com

OK, these are web based e-mail clients.

The others that are HDD clients are here on this site

HDD E-mail Clients

Now , I have also found on this site a comparisons page for you to look over and determine

If any of these web based e-mail clients are better than a HDD mail client.

The site I am referring to is Email Clients.

From this site you can read about and download to try and see which one would be

best for your application.

I could tell you which one I like the most but, that doesn't mean that you too,

would like the same features that I require in a e-mail client.

So, go ahead and click on some of the links and see

for yourself which one you would prefer.

Re: Microsoft Cuts off Hotmail Access via Outlook Express

Thanks for that very helpful information.

My daughter uses a HDD client because at present she is restricted to dial up and needs her emails off line.

I have been using Gmail since it came out and it integrates well tih clients.
