One of the reasons I use open source is just to avoid activation and DRM schemes when motherboards fail and other issues. The countries with "the worst" rankings are very poor, where a computer and its software can be the equivalent of a family's annual income. Open source is becoming a much bigger factor worldwide and will continue to be so just for this reason.
