How Do I Make My Hard Drive Completely Unusable After I Format the Drive

Once I erase my entire hard drive, how could I make it so that files cannot be recovered? Once hard drive is wiped out, is it reusable? Thanks for any input.

Just erasing or formatting a drive will NOT generally make the files unrecoverable. You need to get a program that will overwrite the drive with random 0s and 1s. The more "secure" methods will overwrite the drive many times with random 0s and 1s. You can likely find a bunch of programs that will do it, but someone recommend this one in the past.

Acronis True Image 11 is less expensive than Kill Disk and you get an excellent back up/imaging/cloning software package as well.

Hi Edenney and welcome to PCWorld Communities. :D

Once hard drive is wiped out, is it reusable?

Yes. All you are doing is simply reformatting the drive to allow space for something else. If you are looking to essentially destroy the hard drive to make it unusable, the consensus of the forum is that a drill or screw driver straight through the center of the hard drive will render the drive, and the hard disk, unusable.

Very good question. There are as many answers as your imagination can come up with. But I have to ask, do you want to keep using the drive? If you don't care about it, and want to erase data for good, then open it up. Simply opening it can kill a drive. But just to be sure, you can touch the disk and play with it, smash it with a hammer, put it under water, bend all the pins, attach an explosive to it, etc.

If you want to keep using it though, then yeah, just find a good disk wiper.

If you dont want to keep the hard drive for whatever reason, put a magnet next to it, smash it with a hammer, burn it etc etc, but if you do want to keep it, generally data can always be recovered, but there are a few utilities out there to help rid of this data
