Re: windows update, what are your thoughts?
I don't know what the program is with DirecTV. I had started to look into it, but FiOS became available before I did. I remember doing a download of SP2 with dial up. I was surprised I didn't get dropped before I completed it. It was either 5 or 6 hrs, which I thought was pretty good time considering the estimated download time was much greater. AsI said, my Brother -in - Law has twice the speed that I've got ( 30 mbps down 15 mbps up ). As for the 200 Mb download limit, I'm trying to think if I've ever downloaded that many files in a days time even when I've downloaded music. I remember my Grandmother's farm in North Carolina. It was relaxing, but technology ( telephone ) was slow to get there and as far as todays technology, it may never get out there. unless it suddenly becomes a big bedroom community of the Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Va. Beach. There is some indication that that may be the case. Oh, I just remembered, I had a former sister in law who lived in S. Georgia. Some place called Quitman. She was a bit strange, but then again, I think it ran in the family. coastie

Crazy - if you are on Hughesnet, and are not getting the posted speed, you need to contact their technical department. I noticed a real problem in speeds in early March and when it didn't clear up in a few weeks I contacted them. They were having a transponder problem. It took them a while, but the strange thing is before they fixed it, my signal strength was 86 but download speeds in the pits (below dial-up), after they fixed it, my signal strength was only 66, but the download speeds were up to specs.

Coastie - don't confuse Hughesnet and DirecTv. While both were owned at one time by Hughes, they were always separate. The internet service at one time was called DirectWay, but because of the name similarity, was renamed Hughesnet. I beleive DirecTv is now owned by Rupert Murdoch, but in any case they now have different owners.

To put things in perspective, the full Vista SP1 download was 435MB. With multiple machnes and wanting a copy to archive, I bypassed the upgrade notification install to download the full package and upgrade from that.
