Is there a Significant Difference Between Athlon and Turion Processors

I'm looking to buy a budget laptop. I'm replacing my old Pentium 4 desktop. I don't do high-end graphics - mostly web, MS Office, some database work. No CAD or gaming.

I found a Compaq system in Staples for $399 on sale. It has only 1GB of RAM, but I'd replace that. I thought it had a Turion CPU; after I bought it, I realized that it has an Athlon 64 X2. I'm thinking of returning it. Is there a significant difference between the Athlon and Turion in terms of performance, battery life, etc? It's a dual core chip running at 1.9GHz, with 512KB of L2 cache.

The GPU is an NVIDIA GeForce 7000M, with integrated memory up to 286MB.

Thanks.

Hey jeyges!!

Welcome to PCWorld Community!!

The only difference between the Athlon and Turion is that the Turion is for

notebooks. This would equate to Intel Centrino. It is supposed to use less power

thus you should have more battery.

And also produce less heat.

If you have a 8 to 12 cell battery you should be able to get about 21/2 hours

worth or more of real life battery life with your Athlon. Depending how big the

battery is in your notebook.

My Daughter's HP Compac is a Turion 2.0 GIG with one (1) GIG of ram (memory)

with a 12 cell battery and when we tested it , it played movies for a little

over 5 hours.

As far as heat goes, if you don't block the air intake and exhaust, it will still get hot

but should stay well within the required parameters.

If you are running Vista , I would also recommend another stick of One GiG of ram.

I think you got a very nice and powerful notebook especially for the price you paid.

side note, a 12 cell battery that gave a laptop 21.5 hours of runtime would have gotten some kind of tech award, been all over the news, and an article probably would have been published on PCW.

Hey jeyges!!

Did you try and see if you can get a 12 cell battery for this notebook?/?

At the price you paid for, I think this might be a good idea.

from first read it looks like 21 halves, try spacing the fraction out or use this symbol- &

Intel graphics are no good. Either ati or invidia will be fine, i've had good experiences with both.

Re: Is there a Significant Difference Between Athlon and Turion Processors

Hey jeyges!!

I know you were asking Crazy4Laptops but I will try and put your worries to rest.

First of all, the Athlon is not a Hybrid . It is an equivalent to a single core Intel.

BUT NOT EQUAL TO A CELERON. It is much more powerful.

A Celeron from intel would be the equal of a Sempron from AMD

What we would call "Budget Processors"

I have a ATHLON 3500+ 2.2 GIG which is more powerful

than a 2.2 GIG Intel. single core.

The sales person was not mistaking by much as I consistently

get 2.5 hours with mine. The amount of Cells on the battery

will also determine the time you get off the AC.

Mine came with a 9 cell battery.

Second , the Turion X2 is a mobile core (processor)

You will get more battery life out of this core than with the ATHLON core.

As I stated in my previous post, we tested my Daughter's Turion

which is a 2.0 GIG and we got a little over 5 hours of movie time.

Also the heat produced will be less.

Now for your question on the Pentium dual core, this is a earlier version

and less powerful than the Core 2 Duo.

It has to do with how many threads of information it can process.(to put it in simple terms but it is much more complicated)

As far as the Video is concerned. If you can get a stand alone Graphics card

with dedicated memory (usually around 128megs and sometimes higher for a notebook in the price range you are looking at)

as opposed to a Graphics Accelerator ( On Board Video, like the one from Intel)

I would strongly suggest that you go with the stand alone Graphics Card. This could be from either ATI or NVidia.

The Toshiba that you walked away from can you post the rest of the Specs.

That one sounds very interesting.

Well, I hope I cleared up some of your worries.

If you have any other concerns, I'll be here for a while yet.
