Looking for Tips on Managing svchost.exe Process

Svchost.exe is the most annoying vital process in windows xp. Especially when it's update time. That blasted process eats all of my cpu while downloading/searching for updates. Any tips on having it release it's death grip on my computer?

Caps lock, not necessary all the time.

Re: Looking for Tips on Managing svchost.exe Process
Hi Crazy. Well, I really have no direct suggestion as to the best ways to manage svchost.exe. However, I think you may have two indirect options:

  • Increase memory

  • Increase virtual memory

I am sure you know the best ways to do both so I won't bore you with that. Other than those suggestions, I am not sure.

Re: Looking for Tips on Managing svchost.exe Process

If you are experiencing the same issue I have (100% cpu usage) it could be Windows Defender. I notice it runs completely unseen now except for the svchost.exe that gives it away. There are other aplications that use svchost as well, so you may see several instances running at a time. I have found that I can stop the offending service though without any degradation to the system - as long as you only terminate the instance that is using all the cpu.
