Re: Looking for Opinions on Service Pack 3 for Windows XP
I was not able to download the SP3 update Tuesday evening. I may try over the weekend, or just wait unitl the 27th when I'm over there again. Course, I haven't upgraded all my Vista machines to SP1 yet, I plan to do the last one tomorrow morning.

Hey Piyush!!

Nope, you're not the last one indeed. I have not installed it yet either.

I'm waiting to see what Woody@Ask Woody.com has to say.

If he gives the all clear , then I will also take the plunge.

Have you finished the exams and if so, how did it all go.

FLASHORN.

Re: Looking for Opinions on Service Pack 3 for Windows XP
Hi RGreen. So far, all is well. I have had no issues besides the Zone Alarm issue. SP3 is working seamlessly and I even have some more updates that I am about to download and install now.

Re: Looking for Opinions on Service Pack 3 for Windows XP

hi flash

I was just starting the download through auto update and cancelled it after a minute. I m also not going to install it at this time. I saw so many references to errors related to sp3 installations including the endless reboot , access denied eroors and others . Its not totally clean at this time. Sp1 for vista went without any problems for most of the people (a few had usb problems), the sp1 beta also worked well for me , sp3 beta for xp screwed on uninstallation, what should i expect from sp3.

exams half way over , just managed some time to hang in here at the weekend. But i dont have time to troubleshoot any problems that sp3 may come up with at this time. So will update after the exams are done.

Re: Looking for Opinions on Service Pack 3 for Windows XP

Piyush!!!

Nice to hear from you.

As you have read , not to many of us have the nerves to take a chance on up-dating to SP3.

Like I said , I will wait until Woody has positive proof that the install will in fact go smoothly.

Some who have taken the plunge have also reported that their PCs are faster.

But , some are also still having problems with some services in XP either not working or

disappearing altogether.

So , what you can expect from the update is still to early to say.

You have the address to Woody ( Ask Woody, com ) just drop in once in a while

take a look at his latest posts in case he does give us the OK.

Hope you get STRAIGHT "A"'s.

FLASHORN.

Re: Looking for Opinions on Service Pack 3 for Windows XP
Hi MPH

For your Zone Alarm trouble this post I found at Zone Alarm forum mite help you.
--------------------------------------
This might be useful as I had a problem when I restarted my PC after XP3 upgrade install - As in restart required state.

Problem: ZA pops up the message box asking is something is allowed (in this case svchost). The PC freezes and you cannot do anything. The hourglass remains in view.

Solution: Restart the PC as administrator in safe mode. Those request boxes will pop up again in safe mode and you just click 'accept' ticking the box(es). That's it, it'll work fine and accept in safe mode. After this just exit and restart normally and problem solved.

Since doing this the request boxes have appeared again in normal mode and have worked fine.

Re: Looking for Opinions on Service Pack 3 for Windows XP
Hi Snorg. Ahhh, if it were only that easy. :D

Since I have a Dual Boot System, I have no way of getting into the Windows XP Safe Mode. If I ever have to restart my computer, the normal F8 process brings me to a default Safe Mode window designated for Windows Vista. That is a whole other story. Thanks for the suggestion though. :D

Re: Looking for Opinions on Service Pack 3 for Windows XP
To follow up on my previous post, someone advised me that as soon as I select which Operating System I want to use, I should start to hit F8 from that point, instead of hitting F8 from the initial restart. This suggestion worked perfectly. I will follow up once more after I follow Snorg's suggestion. I have some work to do.

Re: Looking for Opinions on Service Pack 3 for Windows XP

Hey coastie!!

Thankx for the extra info. but, there is a piece of info. in that article

that people might want to verify before installing SP3.

This is what, part of the article has to say:

" Thankfully this problem
is restricted to HP desktop models and does not affect their laptops."

Well, if you do have a HP or a Compac notebook , you had better check!!!

We have two Compac notebooks and BOTH have the Intel driver in the

registry. And BOTH were active " Start Value " set to ..............2 (two)

What has to be done is to change the " Start Value " to ............4 (four)

This will deactivate the start value of the Intel Driver .

I don't know if the info. reported by PC Pitstop is referring only to

US based models but, from what I have seen so far it also should

include the CA ( Canadian ) notebooks .

Re: Looking for Opinions on Service Pack 3 for Windows XP
Hey Flashorn, I agree. The only difference I am aware of as far as electronics go is in PCs and that is the French Canadian ( Quebecois ? ) keyboard. The TV's and DVDs use the same format as well. coastie

Re: Looking for Opinions on Service Pack 3 for Windows XP

I updated to Sp3 today. Installation went fine and no errors or problems with any installed applications . Another happy update. :D

Also got two more updates after the service pack was installed although one was a driver update and one critical update.
