Any Recomendations for Anti-Virus?

I've been using Norton Internet Security and it's about to expire. I'm not inclined to renew it as I've had so many instances of conflicts and it corrupting files. Has anyone else had that problem??

Any recomendations for alternative internet security products? I was thinking about trying Kaspersky since there's a very good deal on right now does this corrupt files? But I'm open to other sugestions as well.

Pete

Re: Any Recomendations for Anti-Virus?

Hey redpete!! Yes, you will find many instances of Norton not playing nice with other apps. I don't think you will find any one member on this forum that would recommend using Norton.

Now, that said, if you are to uninstall Norton , there are certain procedures that you MUST follow if you are not already aware of them. I'll tell you anyways.

First: Uninstall using the Add / Delete in your OS.(operating system)

Second : and this is very important if you want to completely rid yourself of Norton. You Must use the "Norton Removal Tool". You can download it directly from Norton's site or an easier way to access it is here:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/Norton_Removal_Tool_SymNRT_d4749.html.

You should run the Removal Tool at least twice to make sure nothing is left on your PC.

Now, for your Alternatives. If you would still like to use a suite from a security provider , you could take a look at these,

http://www.bitdefender.com/

OR

http://www.eset.com/

The last one is from eset, the maker of NOD32.

On the other hand , if you would simply like Free security, there are very good ones and sometimes better than the paid for products.

It is the general consensus on this forum that these free apps. work well together at protecting you (your PC) . It is also agreed that a tiered solution is best. Meaning that a variety of security apps. rather than, from one company. Always only ONE Firewall. Only ONE Antivirus, and as for your AntiSpyware, Only ONE with Real Time Shields. Here are some recommendations :

Avast AntiVirus : http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html . FREE

OR

AVG AntiVirus : http://free.grisoft.com/ . FREE

ANTISPYWARE:

SUPERAntiSpyware : http://www.superantispyware.com/ . FREE or PAID FOR

Avg AntiSpyware : http://free.grisoft.com/doc/download-free-anti-spyware/us/frt/0 . FREE

Auto Detection .

SpywareBlaster : http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sbdownload.html . FREE or PAID FOR ($10.00) well worth it.

Prevention .

WinPatrol : http://www.winpatrol.com/

All of these security apps. work well together and won't drain your PC of it's resources .

These are my recommendations . You should , however , visit these sites to read about them.

I hope this will help in your quest to be better protected.

Re: Any Recomendations for Anti-Virus?

:D Hi :

Although I favor the FREE Avast Antivirus Home Edition, IF you are interested in Test Results I

recommend the INDEPENDENT http://www.av-comparatives.org . Particularly important are their

latest "Retrospective/ProActive" in Nov 07 which showed the clear "Winner" was the pay-for-it

NOD32 from Eset Software at 71% ; the FREE Avast had 37% . My primary recommendation for

antiSPYWARE/antiTROJAN protection would be "SUPERAntiSpyware" . Software Firewall

Recommendation(s) should be made ONLY IF you tell us the SPECIFIC Name of your

Operating System !?

Re: Any Recomendations for Anti-Virus?

Ahh........ what a hard question..

If I dont use any antivirus program I will feel unsecure, but if I use any of them .. they will destroy my computer. I dont know why, but most of antivirus program is really really bad coded.

My advice for you : before install any antivirus program, let install some program that may help you to remove them completely later, for example Ashampoo uninstaller. Or you will regret it later.

Re: Any Recomendations for Anti-Virus?

Hey there,

I would recommend AVG (anti virus) and super anti spy. I Have been running these 2 for a while and my computer is safe and nothing has been able to get into it, not even me. So i would recommend these two.

Regards

Vlad

Re: Any Recomendations for Anti-Virus?

Hey Funny!! Welcome to PCW.

I don't understand why you would say " . they will destroy my computer ". I am not a progammer, so , I don't know anything about the coding but, in my experience, there are bad ones and good ones . For instance, I used to have McAfee Antivirus and Firewall. I did delete the AntiVirus and that was the end of it.Kept the Firewall , because, this one works good for me.

If you are referring to Norton, well allot of people know and allot more are discovering that yes, this one takes special care to uninstall. But to go as far as saying that you would Destroy your PC, I think not.

This is why , when in doubt , you would come to PCW and ask for either advice or assistance. There is nothing wrong in taking advantage of other peoples experiences. That is why places like PCW forum exists in the first place.

As far as the Ashampoo Uninstaller goes , I don't think it would properly uninstall Norton ,or ZoneAlarm, or even McAfee , as they also have their own ininstall tool

In any case , It is nice of you to drop by ,chat and maybe offer some of your advice and experiences to others .

Re: Any Recomendations for Anti-Virus?

its funny as hell seeing people mention AVG as a top free anti-virus protection. i mean seriously is lowest detection and worst updater a benefit now? also its avg users who are the ones who always flood download sites about safe products containing viruses when they are clean.

lowest detection of actual viruses = unreliable detection of unknown ones

guys AntiVir personal is best free av. highest detection, quickest scanner, least effect on surfing while scanning. also a lot of false positives but unlike avast and avg it lists false positives as generic rather then just a virus when its not. id take a bunch of false positive generics to false positives listed as viruses that if removed ruins good software and possibly windows components.

as for best overall that would go to kaspersky and nod32. kaspersky is best on a clean pc because it has higher detection of new threats while nod32 is higher for current and past threats.

Re: Any Recomendations for Anti-Virus?
I recommend using Zonealarm Antivirus. It currently is being powered by Kaspersky. I have used it without incident for a little over two years without problem as part of Zonealarm's Security Suite.
